The OEM wiper blades are some, if not the best I have ever seen on any car in my life. No sqeeking, skipping nor does it leave any residue, with a perfect wipe everytime without any amount of water volume or wind speed effecting it.
Mine I find leave water streaks, both front and back windows.

Yes, that additive should always be used (its very good stuff in any car btw)
But maybe lemonskin is using a different additive for some reason – I tried some RainX on the Megane once and the wipers wouldn't stop squeaking and skipping.
Emptied the RainX, filled with water + VW stuff, all quiet and good again.
Maybe if you're having problems try the VW stuff, I think it's around $11 for a 1 litre bottle (you use 1-3 capfuls for every tank). It does say in the owners manual that you should/must use it.
Maybe this is my problem... I don't really use any windscreen wiper additive at all? Just water... However I did this with my old Commodore and it was never a problem.

Give them a clean then They get dust and stuff along the edges and then ride over it when sweeping Always pull mine up and run a wet cloth along blades when washing car.
Even then the Polo ones are still terrible

Agreed, everytime you clean the car make sure you clean the rubbers. Like anything on the outside of a car, they become dirty with dirt (which turns to a hard mud when it gets wet) which sit on the edges of the rubber, thus leaving watermarks. I have been doing it since day one and they are still like brand new.

MY MY13 Gti wipers have been junk from day 1, they clicked every time they changed direction, I'd thought it would go away once the rubber has softened up, have tried going from clay bar & alcohol cleaned windscreen to waxed, rainX-ed, hand polished & lubricated blades with armour oil, (one at a time of course) nothing has gotten rid of it completely. RainX was def a mistake, the screen was too slippery & blades chattered away on every stroke. Maybe we haven't had enough rain in last 6 months in Melbs to wear them in.
I didn't think you could adjust the tension on the OEM blades, thought I'd live with it until they're ready to be replaced during a service.
Regarding Ammonia tablets in washer bottle... Is Ammonia any good for the paintwork or polish/wax? I was thinking of flushing it out and putting water, I'd always assumed that dealers put that stuff in your washer bottle to degrade the wipers quicker so you have to replace them more often? It's not in VW's best interest to help conserve my wiper blades, just doesn't make sense.
A little off topic anyone, has anyone found a good method of rejuvenating the black rubber window surrounds on the sides of the car? Mine are starting to look a bit shabby.
You can get just the rubber inserts for the (9N) wipers from VW spares for < $30. You just need to do a bit of disassemble to take the old rubber insert out and replace it. Not sure if this is the case for the 6R.

Basically any rubber protector stuff like armour all (although I've heard that stuff's not that good). I've even used tyre black and it worked really well because after all, rubber is rubber.

Armorall isn't any good because all it does is add a glossy, silicone sheen. You want to use something like 303 Aerospace protectant to get the deep colour back because while Armorall looks impressive, it doesn't put anything back into the rubber.
The only reason I say it is, some people may think that just because the wipers are keeping the windscreen clean doenst mean that the blades them-self are free from collecting dirt and road grime.
