What would your next car be after the Polo GTI?

After waiting for over three weeks I have some information for you Read.

Direct from Wulfsberg Germany,

There will most likely be no "face lift" for the Polo 6R generation as there will be a newly designed / engineered VW Polo with the core concern to limit damage that has been caused to VW city car category, with a newly designed and tested DSG transmission.

My fears it will be another "dry" 7 speed though...I'm firmly leaning to Renault >.<

It will be a dry clutch becuase its better for weight and it's designed for small torque engines - kind of pointless putting in a clutch that can handle 400nm when the engine doesn't do over 150nm. Thing is if they say they are spending the time to fix the 7sp DSG instead if a face lift chances are they could fix it / or make it better.

The Renault is a 6sp dry clutch so that means 2 things - the dry clutch design can work but it needs to be designed properly by VW...or the Renault will suffer from the same problems as VW gearboxes.

There's nothing inherently wrong with dry clutches, almost every manual car has a dry clutch and nobody complains about their reliability. Whatever is/was wrong with the dq200 box is not that the clutch is dry but more to do with the friction material, clutch pack design andaautomatic control of the clutch. All of those things can be done right in which case you'd end up with a perfectly fine gearbox.

True conventional manuals are dry clutch but they also are much larger and thus handle more torque. There is also only 1 clutch creating heat instead of 2 wherein lies the problem.

The other thing is a human will adjust to the varying friction coefficient of the clutch unlike the DSG - which is why it will just slip and shudder past its predefined parameters.- obviously a software fix would improve this but really the clutches need to be kept at a constant temp to reduce heat spikes - this is why wet clutch boxes have much more consistent operation.

I think this is the start of the new model...seeing as there is not much aesthetic difference...perhaps under the car is what is being tested (engine, parts etc) for the new MQB variant?

I'd say this is more on the money rather than facelift. There are more stable rumors that the current polo has just been dropped and an entirely new one developed rather than a facelift due to the ongoing issues with the 6R model. Safer and cheaper to start again rather than continuing to stick band aids over a flawed product....

Yeah I'd imagine it would be a new model, don't see why you'd be hot-weather testing a cosmetic facelift.

I wouldn't say flawed Gavs. In depth I would say the 6r platform has been excelent. The problems that it does have have been carryied over from previous/current models. for example the DSG gearbox has been having problems from its introduction to the Australian market - do I need say more.

Then we have the twin charge engine, again was riddled with problems when fitted to the golf and then they went and put it in the polo GTI and put more stress on it upping the power to 132kw.

Besides that what else has been a problem. The 1.2tsi and 1.6tdi engines have had a good service record and rattles are pretty minimal.
