How do I know if I've had the breather pipe on mine updated??

I bought my gti from a vw dealer, it was used as a demonstrator and had about 11000miles on the clock. I've done about 7000miles since then and put in about 4 litres!the oil light comes on about every 1500miles...

Lol fair enough. It's good to have a balanced voice though

Have there been any reports of the new engine being any better/worse/indifferent?

It would look better if you would've checked the oil level at their carpark, when you picked the car up. Mind you, you'll get most likely an angry reaction if yo do that. I have checked the oil level in the auto transmission in 2 years old Jeep Cherokee after the dealer replaced the torque converter (part of the recall), of cause there was no oil on the AT dipstick and instead an apology, I had to deal with one angry technician there. What was worst, the AT oil was leaking quite badly since they didn't replace the AT oil pump seal and we lost the car for another week. That was 5 years ago, so I'm guessing that these days it could be even worst.

Sorry for doing a bit off topic.

Yeah mines been pretty good, I have put about 1.5 litres in it just under 10,000kms and most of that was for the first 2,000kms that it seemed to burn through it.

Since then its only needed one or two small top ups, mostly short trips to/from train station 15 mins away.

2300km of spirited driving and mine hasn't needed any.
Last I checked the dipstick it was still at the top as well.

Fingers crossed for my little GTi

Built Oct 2012, not sure what engine that gives me.

It would be better if I didn't have to because they did their job properly! I will be checking from now on though...

Incidentally, after the mechanic answered "about a litre" to my query of how much oil he put in it, I expressed surprise and asked if that was normal and he replied "yeah, the GTIs use a lot of oil".

I'll be suggesting to the Service Manager that perhaps they need to actually check each individual vehicle's oil level rather than going by a rule of thumb that GTIs use a lot of oil, whack a litre in it and send it out the door.

Mine needed a litre at 1700ks (im thinking it wasn't even full when I got it) and hasn't really moved at all since (now 5500ks). Mines an MY12.5

There should be a sticker on the body inside the front passenger door (near where your passengers hip would be) that lists your VIN and also Engine Number, prefixed by either CAVE or CTHE.

                        Awesome, will check this afternoon.
                        Which engine is preferable?

Don't know that it's a matter of preference, but the CTHE is the updated engine generally found on MY13 GTIs although some very early MY13s still had the CAVE engine I think.

So far *touch wood with fingers crossed* the CTHE engines seem less likely to experience heavy oil usage, but it's early days.

So far, I've been very happy with my GTi....300ml in 7000klms & no other problems.

I don't think I would of bought it if I'd read about the oil consumption issues on here beforehand.

The oil light came on in mine the other day at exactly 8000k. I'm ashamed after knowing about this issue it even happened

Is this good or bad as far as oil usage goes on these little GTI's? I don't mind if I have to top it up between services all I want to know
is this a good enough reason to complain at the dealership that they install the breather to hopefully improve usage?

Cars going in next Tuesday for a part replacement to fix oil consumption. Hopefully this will fix my oil issues.... Apparently there is an updated version to that breather part.
