  • Polo GTI Low Oil Usage - Anyone else?

    Hi There,

I browse the High Engine Oil usage thread from time to time and I see some pretty awful stories.

Just wondering if I can hear from those who have NO engine oil problems?

I've had my car for almost 7,000km now... From 18,400 km to 25,200 km. I have topped up maybe half a litre of oil in this time and really only just to keep the oil level at or near "A" on the dipstick. I would say I check the oil once every 3-4 weeks.

Of course I keep a litre of oil in the boot just in case something happens but I have barely had to use it.

Anyone else care to share their stories of not having to worry about the engine oil?

    Cheers
    Michael

I've just ticked over 4000k in my CTHE-engine GTI and when I took the car back to the dealership last week for it's complimentary oil check up the mechanic said he put "about a litre" of oil in it. It would only be a guess as he used a plumbed in hose to top it up and I couldn't see any sort of gauge/meter on it to tell him how much had gone in.

That was a surprise to me - since picking it up the oil on the dipstick had only moved fractionally from the top of "A" toward the bottom of "A" (I was checking it weekly to monitor usage). Puzzled by this, I checked my oil level again when I got home and now it is well and truly over filled. Not exactly confidence-inspiring...

Perhaps the dealership mechanics haven't changed their mentality from dealing with the CAVE-engined GTIs that may routinely need 1L top ups? Or maybe they just don't give a ****...

Go back and speak to the service manager. While picked up early that mistake by his employee could have destroyed your catalytic converter.

Mine dropped half way down the stick in the first 5k. Had the breather done and they topped it up right to the orange ball. I'm now at 9 k and its dropped to the start of the wide part. If I could go the 15k / one year without the light going on I'd be happy. Hopefully it will steady a little more after the first service.

Since the 15K service I've not added a drop...now sitting on 25K. No breather pipe update either.

BUT...I've had the oil pressure panic alert (RED) ramdomly coming on ever since that 15K service. Had it checked out by VW and Euroclass...and came back with nothing. Has to be electrical surely.

Gavs is right about over filling damage, the user manual clearly states that damage to the exhaust may occur if filling over the A mark.

Yeah, I checked the book after seeing oil way up on the high orange 'blob' above the A mark and didn't like what I read. Going back to the dealership for a please explain.

My CAVE is fine for now (production date 07/2011): in the first 12.000Kms I added about 1 liter, then with breather pipe changing the consumption is further reduced, in the last 8.000Kms I added only 0.3 liter...

So totally in 20.000Km about 1.3l
