  • Hub Centric Rings Question?

Ok, I've got my new set of wheels on. Took the car into JAX yesterday with the thought of getting some hub centric rings for them. The techo/manager did a some research and measurements and told me that for such a small gap of 2mm it was not worth getting them as the car didn't exhibit any vibration at all, he also said it's perfectly safe for this particular situation. He also said that they would have to get them machined down to that 2mm mark...pretty expensive to do, apparently.

Thoughts? particularly on safety, as this is my main concern...then performance issues.

    Queue the popcorn...

Some will say it's an issue. Some will say otherwise.

Your wheel bolts should see virtually no shear force, as friction between the hub and the face of the wheel will be what locate it. As long as you torque correctly, in order (two stages to 100ft, skipping each second works for me) you shouldn't see a problem.

Someone is bound to jump on and say "Oh but potholes" and such may cause the wheel to slip. I've never seen this first hand. Additionally, I had a car that I used to regularly jump, with a huge hub gap. Never had a wheel fall off... *shrug*

YMMV - imho they only make installation easier.

The only issue would be if the wheel isnt located centrally and you get vibration. The hub spigot doesnt carry load its about locating the wheel correctly.

Sorry I have to ask, a car you regularly jumped?

          Re: Hub Centric Rings Question?

Forgive my naïveté, but if the nuts are domed, don't they center the holes on the bolts? If all the bolts are all centred, wouldn't it follow that the the wheel itself would be centred without the need for a hub?

It's really the fronts you have to be more concerned about.

you can buy 57.1 /59.1 off the shelf (assume that's what you need?)

google it. try ebay, hubcentric rings.com or Tempe Tyres

Yeah, I did a test fit before getting the rubbers and installation. It seemed to fit perfectly, bolted on right and centered, nice and firm....just that very small gap. I know it's better to have the wheel and hub fit perfectly to share the load, but 2mm? I tend to agree with ecks's observations.

Thanks Brad, I might try that.

is it 2mm across the entire diamter or 2mm each side? If 2mm each side, I would be getting the rings. if 2mm total, that wouldn't be *that* much more than manufacturing tolerances....

You can theoretically get away with not running them at all. YES, if you bolt the wheel up with little attention paid, you may come across a vibration due to the wheel not being perfectly centralised. If you torque each bolt up incrementally in a star formation then you will center the wheel progressively and hopefully avoid loading it unevenly on one bolt. 2cents/

                      +1 to what gavs said.

If it's 2mm gap then it may as well be 5mm or 10mm.

Yeah, had a few G200 charades in my time. Did the "big block" (1.3 upto 1.6l) swap in most of them, and there was one that I punished a little more than the rest. Often got it airborne

                            I miss my charades :'(
