Many years ago (over 20) I had a Torana. A moment's inattention saw me run up the back of a Camira wagon. Fortunately the Camira wagon tailgate incorporated part of the rear bumper and was really strong. My Torana saw its heavy steel front bumper flattened, and a driving light was pushed through the plastic radiator grille.

Well, it did not affect the performance of the car, so even though I had bought a new bumper, I had not fitted it. I was working in Eastwood and parked in one of the side streets. One day, when I got to the car after work to drive home, I noticed a note under the wiper. It was written with a very shaky hand where the girl apologised profusely for reversing into my car and damaging the front bumper!

Apparently, she was reversing back in front of my car and misjudged the distance. When she touched my Torana, she got out and thought that it was her little touch that caused flattened bumper. Actually I could not even tell where she bumped it.

She did leave her name and telephone number so I rang it when I got home. Her brother answered the phone and I told him what had happened and that she had not caused any damage. He said he would tell her...eventually.

        hahah good work.

I was running late for a gig and parked way too quickly clipping the back of a van. Got out and wrote a note with my name and number etc on it. Then realised the van was for the HOuse with No Steps charity. Felt pretty low at this point.

Few days later they called and said don't worry about it and thanks for leaving the note. Karma

I backed into an old volvo once and seriously gave it thought. I was in my kombi, no damage other than a cracked taillight. Then thought naah and started writing the note. And then figured I could be just pretending to write a note in case anyone was watching. But then thought naah and left the real note.

Couple of hours later I get an abusive phone call and wished I had of did a runner.

A couple of days later I got a phone call from my insurance company saying they had lodged a claim for a hyundai. I'm no car encyclopedia, but I reckon I've kinda got the basic difference between a volvo and a hyundai sorted. It eventually must have went through though because I got the bill for the excess.

I havent had any good karma come of it in the form of paybacks.

Things like this really makes me want to buy one of those in car camera that record footage while driving\ parked. Battery probably won't last the whole day but for shorter parking times in dodgy areas, its almost worth it.

Re: Who's touched-up another vehicle, then done a runner?

I brushed the tyre of a guys ute with the bumper when borrowing a family members car that was a bit bigger than mine, trying to park in a tight place too quickly. Didn't have any paper and was there to pick up pizzas so quickly went into the pizza store to pick up the pizzas, genuinely planning to write my details on the receipt, even though i could see no damage on their car. Returned no more than 3 minutes later to see the owner and a witness standing there furious, which is fair enough, I'd do the same if someone had told me someone had hit my car and walked off. Gave him my details and sorted it out, luckily the only damage was to the car I was driving.

I hate it when things like this happen, I'm always super paranoid about where I park my car, even if it means parking in an inconvenient spot. If I ever see such incidents happen I always make sure to leave a note with the rego number of who hit them on the victims car if possible.

By the way, you should always photograph the car you may have tickled as if you simply said you bumped it, an unscrupulous individual could easily get you to pay for a lot of damage you did not cause.

I've had this happen. I bumped my old '91 Suzuki Swift into a BMW, who then clained I did a whole heap of bumps into his bumper (some overlapping circles, possibly for rear parking sensors?) with the screws on my number plate. Mate, I hit you once, not 15 times.

This thread has changed slightly so I can share some incidents which were dealt with legally. I accidentally hit my 91 Falcon into a Mirage. Bent my bumper struts, broke my blinker. Maybe $60 worth of damage. Bent her plastic wheel arches into the tyre, destroyed her bumper bar, and nearly wrote her car off ($3,000 in damage vs $60 to mine). She wanted a tow-truck (which might have seen me done for neg driving) I politely punched her plastic guards back in to shape so she could drive.

As soon as one of my HSC exams finished, I got pulled up by the head exam monitor - which was a little scary. Apparently someone had accidentally reversed into my car before class, and was freaking out about it. The woman was freaking "please don't involve the police, she's a good girl"
Me: "Look, I have to go to the police to fill out a P5 Accident report, but it's fine nothing will happen"
Her: "Here talk to her dad... sir, Rob is going to the police, can you please talk him out of it? She's a young girl, a good girl, and she doesnt need this"
                    Dad: "P5?"
                    Me: "Yup"
                    Dad: "sweet, no probs"

Cops: "So she left the scene of an accident without exchanging her details?"
Me: "well she got the details to me..."
Cops: "No, she left the scene of an accident, and didn't exchange details, that's a crime and we can arrest her"

                    *cheeky pause*

Twice in a month this has now happened to me and for good measure, yesterday's incident was on my birthday.

Before the Golf I had an 03 Subaru Liberty that had to be parked on the street while I lived at the olds place. Walked out to it one morning to find the front quater panel very neatly caved in between the wheel arch and head light. No note, nothing. The dent was suspiciously the same shape and height as the back of a RAV4, one of which happened to be owned by the neighbor who's driveway was over the road from where my car was parked. I wandered over and asked her if she had heard anything in the night. The next day dad was on the recieving end of a tirade from said women claiming I accused her of reversing into my car. Guilty much? $900 out of my pocket later, car was fixed.
