  • Just found this video of a cluster swap

Polo 6R GTI tacho in Polo 1.2 TSI - YouTube

The video says that someone has swapped a polo GTI cluster into a 77TSI.

Not that I'm thinking of doing this (unless I find a GTI cluster on the street) but does anyone know how straight forward it would be? there would have to be some coding done surely?

Would be one of those "I wish I'd just bought the GTI" mods I guess, but the temp and nicer MFD would be nice. And needle sweep hahah!

It's fairly trivial to do. You pull out the old one and plug the new one in.

You need the new cluster to be in the blank / reset state, you need both keys you have for your car and you need a willing dealer to program the new cluster in so the car continues to work. Once you swap the cluster over as the IMMO system is part of the cluster the car will no longer start until it's correctly paired by the dealer.

I've wanted to do this for quite a while, however, finding a willing dealer is challenging.

In the video, the tacho can do a needle sweep! If i remember correctly, you cant do that in a 6R!

I'm pretty sure I saw something in the VCDS thread (sticky) that said there is no needle sweep by default but you can enable it via VCDS.

Only the older GTI clusters can do the sweep, not the newer ones. Obviously finding a chummy dealer is the big issue here.

surely one of the tuners could also do this ?

Accessing the immo is serious business, as it also gives you the power to mess with the odo and change keys. So naturally VW has it pretty locked down. Buying a new tacho is a little easier thanks to them being in factory mode.

is there a way to find out which "older" version can do the sweep?

I think only some the first 2010 units got it :\

Yep, the MED17.5 units could, they updated at MY11 to the MED17.5.5 and removed this function.
