Just do it up tight - it's not a structurally important item

I've always come to understand the relevant specs as:

Drain plug: 22 ft lb / 30 Nm
Oil filter: 18 ft lb / 25 Nm

Shouldn't be very tight at all.

I do them up firm, but not crushing the washer into oblivion. Nip them up, and give maybe another 1/4 of a turn.

        30Nm does sound pretty close.

I know its not but to do it up too tight on a alloy sump may cost you more than a couple of weeks wages when you strip the thread and have to replace the sump..

VW specify a set amount of which I am unsure

Ive owned 40+ cars so have done a fair few oil changes but always on steel sumps

          Thats why Im asking.

Thanks to MYTHIK for a constructive answer

            M14 sump plug 30Nm
            M25 Sump Plug 50Nm

I agree hillbilly, it might not be structural but the correct torque can mean the difference between $2 for a plug of $750 for an entire sump.
