  • Soft noise when driving off

2-3 week old 2013 VW Polo Comfortline 77TSI DSG.

I only just noticed this when stereo was off, after putting car into D, when driving off, there is a soft noise that is hard to describe. Not a engine or gearbox noise, or creaking... best description would be the noise cars with auto locks make, i.e. cars where when you drive over 10-20km the doors lock automatically. Very soft locking like noise. i dont think this car has auto locks.

this happens everytime, but only on the first set off. it does not happen after breaking to a complete stop and going off again.

any clues if this is normal?

They do have auto lock over 15 km and yours is working buy the sound of it. You will notice the same noise when you open your door or pull the key out once you have stopped.

just tested that theory, i can open doors after the noise and at 15-17kmph (the exact speed the noise is made)

i think you may be right, this is when it occurs:
turn engine on, hand break off, D, accelerate, 17kmph noise
turn engine on, hand break off, S, accelerate, 17kmph noise
turn engine on, hand break off, D1, 10kmph, D2, 17kmph noise
turn engine on, hand break off, D1, 17kmph noise
turn engine on, hand break off, R, accelerate, break, D, accelerate, 17kmph noise
in all these tests, after the noise, breaking and coming to a stop then accerlerating again, the noise never came again.
it could only be made again if placed into P, turning engine off, then on again and performing the test again.

since it didnt matter what gear it was in, and the noise was only made at exactly 17kmph or 15 hard to measure.... ABS break tests sounds like what it is.

Yeah there was a discussion about a few weeks ago. You should feel it through the brake pedel when it happens too.

It's one of those things that's hard to figure out and get info on. I only just found out why my fans made a weird oscillating noise very late at night (Motor making a sound from the off peak signal AU power companies send).

You can still open doors from the inside after it locks. drive off then stop and get some one else to try open from the outside. If activated you will hear it when hou pull the key out with doors shut. Some cars have had it working from factory but i had to code mine with VCDS. Iv never heard my abs unit while driving only on start up.

Ahhhh I see! I'll give that a play around when I can. Hahaha, and after all this time, I kept hitting the lock button inside.

My GTI makes the exact same noise after 17km/hr.

I just assumed it was the auto lock feature (even though the inside locks don't actually lock)

Mine makes a light noise under the bonnet like something has moved slightly Has done it since new and only ever does it once moving.

Can idle it in the drive and it doesnt do it at all so presume it is something to do with BRAKES. Definitely isnt door locks as you can hear

them thump in both beside and behind you as my Passat has them (now disabled) . It could be a choke reset as well Ive never worried about it.

Slightly OT but when you open the door on my 9N3 you hear the fuel pump kick in to get ready to go.

I always pretended my car was saying hello.

                        Ok ill go now

We had this discussion in another thread recently. It is the ESP system doing a self diagnostics on the braking channels on the car. Will happen once as only once when the car is started and you take off for the first time over 15kmh.

Is it normal for the brakes to feel a little weird and there is also another noise coming from the wheels when you drive/reverse after you've just started the car. Once you go over 15km/hr and stop and repeat the process the noise is gone. I figured this also has to do with the ESP thing you mentioned?
