  • Run in period

Hi guys. For some of you with some bigger kms on the clock, I'd like to pose a few questions. I know every car is different, but how did you find the engine run-in period? That is, when did you notice it was freed up completely? When did you notice you were starting to get your best economy? On my car I noticed a big change in the car from 150-200km when the engine became more free/powerful and about 1000 when the intake became more noticeable and consumption dropped a little. I'm at about 3,000 km now so will I notice anything further? I must say, I'm loving the performance and economy of my car. I had driven a DSG with 15,000km before I bought mine, which I loved and 2 low km manuals. One with 8km which I took to 32km at a small dealer (poor customer) and a demo from 14km upwards, so I didn't get the feeling of it freeing up after 150km.

I'm hoping for answers related for the 77TSI but happy for this thread to feature the GTI too (as long as people say which car, unless it's obvious). Thanks in advance everyone!

    Run in period

To be honest Dan I never. Prices a difference until I had a tune done on my GTI. Engines are pre run in before they are even fitted in the cars these days so what you are describing is probably more in line with the electronic systems in the car sorting themselves out and working more harmoniously together. To give you an idea, when I had the 37G7 campaign carried out, the car was like brand new again and took about 2000kms to fully settle down again.

Run in period? I didnt go straight to redline out of the dealer driveway. But I went down the freeway 20 minutes to the nearest 100km hour zone where I could do 20 flat out 100kmh - 20kmh - 100kmh brake bedding runs without someone running up my backside. That was my "run in". I have almost 5,000km on the clock and I havent felt any difference. I dont expect I will.

        I have had 7 fills. 7.2, 6.9, 7.0, 6.6, 6.6, 6.7 & 6.6 l/100km. So there was a drop after the 3rd fill, but maybe I got over having a new zippy car after the first 1800km.
