  • Missing nuts in engine bay?

    Hi Guys,

After doing a routine engine oil top up today, I saw something strange, looks like there are two nuts missing in my engine bay. I also found that the driver side windscreen cowl is not sitting correctly, allowing dirt to sit inside.

I would appreciate if someone could confirm if I am missing two nuts in my engine bay, and confirm that their cowl sits flush with the windscreen. (The passenger side cowl sits nice and flush.)

Photos can be found on my skydrive: http://sdrv.ms/YMolf0

You will also see some soot images in there, collecting them for my next VW visit.

    Thanks in advance, Andrew.

In terms of engine bay nuts.. mine looks the same as yours. So you're not missing anything there.

But my cowl sits flush on all the way along, drivers and passengers side.

My new Jetta also had those screw plates missing, just bought 2 new ones from VW, 40c each... Simply screw on.

My engine bay looks the same as well - bar swapping the VW badge for a Skoda one.

May I ask what fuel are you using? Since it could be fuel quality/octane related and nothing to do with the VW.

            Hi Transporter,

I have tried multiple service stations using BP Ultimate, and I have consistent soot coming out the exhaust. This may also explain the high engine oil usage I am getting of approx 1L/1000km. I am happy to try different fuel to test the theory.

How much Oil is the car burning?
You could always take your car to an independant mechanic (not VW) to do an emissions test.

My car is burning a little over 1L/1000km. I will need to visit VW this week to get a top up and get a spare 1L bottle before it goes dry during the holiday period.

                  Holy Cow.
Greater than 1 L per 1000km is bloody shocking.
I wouldn't put up with that.
I had an old Alfasud with a very worn engine that burnt less oil than that and my mechanic had to put in the thickest oil available so it would pass the road worthy emissions test.
Honestly tell them you are not happy about it, and if it does not improve you want something done to rectify the problem.

                    Hi Andrew,
My MY13 Gti was missing the same fasteners after it cam back from a warranty repair 4 weeks into ownership. I think they removed the sound deadening on the firewall to fix the sound actuator dash board rattle. When I showed the service centre mechanic that there was a fastener missing and if he had a spare one laying around that he could affix to said area, he proceeded to crap on about how he would have to order one from Germany & I would have to book it in again. I smiled & told him not to worry. The following week when they gave me a loan car to fix a problem they made on the second visit back for repairs 4 weeks into ownership, I managed to find the parts I needed off that car. Problem solved, no need to order anything from Germany.

                          Missing nuts in engine bay?

From memory, there should be a press-on speed nut that goes on those studs to stop the insulation flapping about....
