Did a dyno run on saturday, after they struggled for 5 mins to get the car to change up.

Quite pleased! Power is at the wheels, dyno is fairly accurate. I know a local publication did a shootout between a Clio RS and Polo GTi, when they saw how a car with "less quoted kw" was quicker over certain distances, they did dyno runs, with both the clio and polo pushing power at the wheels in the 120's. Which is excellent.

So either VW underquotes flywheel power, or the drivetrain is very effecient.

249Nm at the wheels?!?! Mate, good on you for putting your car on the dyno but there is no way that in stock form your car will be putting out 249Nm at the tyres. VW will not rate the dry clutch pack DSG at more than 250Nm so to think it would leave the factory with ~355Nm at the flywheel is a damn big stretch.

Either the dyno chart has been corrected for drivetrain loss or the dyno operator ha a very, very high reading dyno. Sorry.

I Agree, Dyno's mean little. But I do know that a publication, and a few others have all gotten similar readings At the wheels. So there is no loss compensation.

In addition to this, I have seen results at dyno's at different location giving similar readings.

Lastly, SA Carmagazine did dyno runs at the wheel, and the CLIO Sport gordini and Polo gave similar wheel outputs. They attributed it to the polo having really good (low) drivetrain power loss.

That dyno is fairly accurate, after chatting to quite a few people that used it that day...

I just thought its interesting. I know it has a bit of a "too good to be true" reading, but there you have it.

PS. a mate of mine with his cosworth fiesta ST did 141kw (adjusted flywheel reading) that same day at a different dyno. He then joined me and got 121kw (at the wheels) at the same dyno i did. So day for day, dyno for dyno, the polo had more power than a cosworth ST 190+, which on paper should have had more.

Either way, I actually went to the dyno event to register for 800m drags happening 1st december. Im gonna do 3 runs. Against the Cosworth ST, CLio 200 (stock) and whatever else might be interesting. Thats the only proper way to guage performance.

Sorry nazmo but it still sounds very, very dubious to me. Efficient drivetrain, no way it is efficient enough to lose at best, 10Nm. Tyre pressures on a dyno can have that much of a bearing. And being more powerfully than a Sierra cosworth?!?! Yeah right. One of the guys at work has one and there is absolutely no way that it is putting out the same power as my GTI, even if it is 30yrs old. You're talking of a total loss of close to 200kw of power so it's either a very, very tired example without its turbo anymore or I smell something fishy.

Crossed wires here methinks - zasmo is comparing the Polo to a Fiesta ST 190 and a Clio RS, NOT a Cosworth Sierra (used as the base for famous late 80's early 90's touring cars (racers) here in Australia zasmo)

Well matched showing for the drags zasmo Polo GTi, 132kw; Clio RS, 147kw; Fiesta ST 190, 142kw - both those cars are about 100kgs heavier so it should be close (plus the DSG should help in a straight line)
I'd be tempted to think you might beat em both!

In the theoretical world that he was comparing it to a real stock Cosworth Sierra (and not a race car) - you'd find the Polo competitive on a dyno as they only had 200-220hp standard when brand new

I apologise, yes, not a sierra cosworth as I read.

I still don't believe it as those figures just are not plausible for wheel readings on a dyno.



The car in that dyno graph is running a LOBA motorsports hybrid turbo, pace products intercooler and radiator, stage 2 tune, full turbo back Milltek exhaust, water/methanol injection, Okada plasma coilpacks and ITG maxogen intake. It puts out ~350Nm of torque.

As I said, there is no way that reading is acurate.
