Another update, it looks like the failure is control valve 3, N435. This is the solenoid that controls the clutch slector arm for the odd gears (1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th) and, judging by the error message (thanks Jake!) it looks like this valve is jammed open which would explain why I could select 4th gear after 3rd, but not 5th.
So, awaiting confirmation but it looks like this is the problem. nfortunately however, this means a whole new mechatronics unit because the service techs aren't allowed to open the mechatronics units. I wonder how that would go in the after market world, $4000-5000 for a whole mechatronics unit rather than $100 for a solenoid and oil + labour charges.....

Alfa SeleSpeed mechanisms are similar and there are locals who will refurbish them for much less than replacement cost so if can source the parts/fluids etc, then yeah!

I thinks it's a generic mechatronics issue. I'm going off self diagnosis here after reading the 0AM DSG self-study guide cover to cover, 3 times as well as the 0AM DSG repair manual. In fact it could be one of 2 things. Either valve N435 which I mentioned above (clutch 1 actuation) or valve N436 which is the pressure control valve for drivetrain 1. This controls the highly pressurised oil in the mechatronics (650psi) for all 3 actuation solenoids in drivetrain 1 which include clutch 1 and the selector fork for gears 1&3 and also the selector fork for gears 5&7.
I am (im)patiently awaiting diagnosis confirmation.... The issue is trying to find out what caused the fault rather than finding the fault itself...
Thanks for that Greg, that would be valuable for anyone with a DSG out of warranty!
Yeah, it's turning into a bulltish headache I can say that much! Especially since in China, the USA and Russia they have replaced DQ200 mechatronics units and clutch packs, no questions asked AND offered a 10 year warranty in these countries due to the massive amounts of failures. Scapegoat anyone?!?!
