  • Does anyone know anything about window tinting?

Hey guys, got a couple of questions regarding the tint in my gti.

I seem to remember reading something about the tint being some special heated tint?
Now im looking at getting darker tint done on mine and was wondering if I should remove the factory tint first or would over laying it on the standard tint be a better option?

Thanks in advance for any info you can give me.

    Cheers Nick

I thought the windows were manufactured darker and not actually a film, I got quoted $230 for 18% tint.

Factory tint is in the glass itself, so it's not an adhesive film.

Not sure what transperancy percentage it is, so you'd best talk to a tinter about how dark the film needs to be to make the factory tint a bit darker.

^^18% is darker than legal. 5% you can hardly see through.

        Good to hear, thanks fella's.

I was thinking 5% would look good against my black paint but maybe too dark seeing as the tint is already in the glass?
I'll be doing it myself as I have plenty of experience in vinyl application so tints shouldn't be too hard to handle.

I got 18% sides and 5% rear. Looks awesome but hard to see out of at night.

Yep always take into account the factory tint will change the overall % so even if you try to be legal you may get screwed.

            Heres my tint

22% at the front. the original privacy glass is already around 37% so i only put a 52% on the back which makes it around 18% in the end. I already find 22 at the front pretty hard to see through when driving at night and need to put down my windows when parking. wouldnt recommend 5% PM me if you want to see my car in person

GTI doesn't have privacy glass, it is the same glass front and rear.

35% is the minimum light transmittance. The ADR is the same as the EU regulation UNECE 43/00R. Every day I look at that clause of the standard

On my NZ purchased GTI the rear windows are definitely tinted whereas the fronts are not. First registered July 2012.

That's because it's not Australian delivered. The GTI in Australia does not have privacy glass.

                      Looks better than clear IMO

Just looked up specs "65% light absorbing privacy glass for rear window and rear side windows" standard on gti and a $650 option on the other Polos.

Got ours done by a mobile tinter the other week. 30% charcoal tint for $220 with warranty. Looks fantastic!
Getting our new Focus done this Friday by the same guy.
If you need his number let me know.

do you have any pics? I want to get 18% but worried it will be too dark with this "factory" tint on there.

Will do ASAP. Stick with the (semi)legal tint around 30%. Any darker and it is a bitch to drive at night. Trust me, been there....
