  • MY12.5 Polo GTi - Rattle under heavy acceleration

    Hi Guys,

I am hearing a rattle come from the dash, near the middle where the dash meets the windscreen when I am under heavy acceleration. I have tried pressing down on certain areas of the dash and cannot stop the rattle. This is starting to get very annoying. Car is stock and only driven 600km.

Is anyone else experiencing this issue?

    Hello and welcome.

Very common problem, believe it has something to do with the artificial sound actuator, or some lines in the engine bay moving around?? Seems like an easy enough fix. Mine has just began to make the noise.

You can find it on the issues thread in this forum.

Just call the dealer. Book it in for a warranty repair. Easiest way to deal with it.

Only IF they find the problem, for me, they took my car for a day and found nothing, picked it up drove back and it was there.

Also have the rattle in middle of dash, as well as one on the front passenger side near the air vent, driver seat creaks under acceleration and a rattle in the boot somewhere.

          Thanks for the reply guys.

I just had a read of the actuator issue, this seems interesting. Although I don't want to make the car even more quiet than it is.

From what I read, there are various reasons rattling can occur:
          1. Actuator
          2. Heater
          3. Moving cables in engine bay
          4. Random

Annoying thing is, I went from a modified Honda Integra type S to a Euro car because of rattles!

          arrg!

Let me get the car to around 1000km so I can give it a hard time and test out when these rattles are happening.

Middle of the dash will be the sound actuator. If you do a search, a few of us have posted up how to disconnect it. If you can disconnect it, replicate the driving situations and the rattle isn't there, that is what it will be.

Thanks gavs, Yeah I had a read through that nice and long thread.

Its a shame its fake noise, although I was surprised a 1.4L could make that much noise.

I will give it a try and get back to this thread......

I disconnected the SoundAktor and the dash rattle went away.
To have again an acceptable noise from the GTI (without SoundAktor it seems a 1.2) I removed the central silencer, very easy operation, replacing it with a direct inox pipe, welded in the front part and using the original band in the rear.

This is the result (video done on a Ibiza 1.4TSI with the same modification):

I have very nice "BANG" shifting from a gear to another...!!!

This is a similar pipe I used, the first of the list: http://www.inoxcar.it/VWPolo.html

I also have the same problem when accelerating from low revs. Aside from removing the actuator, is there anything else that can be done to eliminate it?

Take it back to a dealership to get it fixed under warranty?

Hi guys, I just picked up a brand new MY13.5 Polo GTI and I immediately noticed a rattle from mid-dash that seems to be similar to what is being described in this thread

under specific engine loads the annoying rattle noise is very apparent from the dash. how did you go with VW fixing it?

Yeah, take it back to the dealership to get it fixed. Although my car has been in 3 times to fix it and at certain RPM it still happens, most of it is gone though.

Thanks guys. And can I ask if the issue was with the sound actuator or something else?

Mine was the actuator, don't know what they did but they seemed to know exactly what I was talking about when I dropped it off there.
