  • Problems Already With Polo GTI DSG

Has anyone experienced any problems with their DSG getting stuck in 3rd gear ?

I picked up my 12.5 Polo GTI on Wednesday and by Thursday the gearbox was playing up. Gets stuck in 3rd and revs like crazy. Annoying thing about it is that it's not doing it all the time which means I have to try and film it happening whilst driving to prove something to the dealership. Plus when moving from a stand start it jerks and stutters.

    Any feedback would be appreciated

That should be enough prove, or does it do it only sometimes as well?

Chances are, when it misbehaved, the fault maybe stored in the ECU, so sooner you go to the dealer, the better.

Whatever you do don't let them tell you there is a software update to be loaded on your DSG and that'll fix it.

A little bit of shudder during run in has been common, just depends how bad. If you fell like a bobble head when it happens then its not normal.

Are you driving in D or S? S will hold gears for a long time.

Is your foot flat to the floor when this happens? The gearbox will drop straight back to 3rd no matter what mode your in if you push it flat down.

Why not? The software update is specifically to correct a false neutral between gears issue that is due to sticking valves in the DSG when the vehicle has been sitting idle for some time. It happened the day after delivery so it could well have been "sitting idle for some time".
Update only applies to vehices within a certain VIN range. If its within the range dealer will do update (although should have been done during pre delivery). If VIN not in the range update won't apply so dealer shouldn't claim a software update is to be applied.

To echo some of the other responses, a bit more detail will help us. Are you seeing this in D or S?

I have a 12.5 GTI, and see 3rd gear holding in Sports a fair bit. Longer than most other gears, but I don't have this if I'm in D.

Your sluggish experience taking off is similar to my experience to an extent which is that, depending on how I take off, the gearbox in D wants to jump to 2nd gear almost at take-off, so it can feel slow and somewhat sluggish. But if I'm in S, and take off with some energy, no issues
It nearly caught me out once, because I was stuck behind some cars that were turning, and I went to pull out to my left, and found myself slugging in second, when what I wanted was to be powering away in first. Almost ended up with a pajero in my back seat.

Next time you see it sluggish, try and notice what gear it's in, and also, note how fast you were taking off.

              Thanks for the responses guys.

I'm definitely driving in D. And I'm driving it conservatively

It's happened every time I have driven the car at least once if not twice during the drive

Hate to state the obvious, but have you tried driving around in S and seeing if there's a difference? When it feels sluggish, is it in any particular gear, or when you're doing something in particular?

Actually no, the 37g7 campaign is to alter the seating position of the shift solenoids at rest so they return to a proper home position reducing the likelihood of solenoid failure. Most vehicles after oct 2011 seem to have the updated software already. It has nothing to do with the shifting of the gearbox whatsoever, any changes in shift style experienced by people is due to the software being reset and the gearbox needing to relearn how to behave more sedately.

Hi Pere, welcome to the world of DSG..... I had a Jetta with the 7DSG in it, loved it to bits until it played up on me with a car load of kids on a trip.
After a period of 4 weeks, a replacement mechatronics unit was fitted then all was good, loved it again until...... shuddering started.
After 2 adaptions were carried out, all seemed great, fell in love again, then......... shuddering again!
Got the sh*ts, sold it, got a 6 speed manual Tiguan...... love it too bits and no faults ever since.
Tiggy 125TSI, 6 speed manual, tints, comfort pack.

If your issue is only appearing on hills, it seems like this might be something related to the hill-hold option, and not the same as the original poster here.
