  • Should I be worried?

    Hey all,

I am about to take delivery of a candy white polo gti, and have been doing a little bit of reading on the forum.

I noticed that there has been a few issues, and I am looking for reassurance. Is the general consensus that these cars are a good decision? or has everyone been a little jaded? Even with all the problems, do you all still love your cars?

Looking forward to hearing from other owners, and more than anything I'm looking forward to some great drives! I have to admit that I can't stop thinking about the first run up the Macquarie pass, and a great bit of road between there and Bowral, and also the national park......

Don't worry about any issues unless they show up on your new car. If anything does happen at least you have the information for a quick(er) resolution. Enjoy... those roads you mentioned are great.

Sweet, thanks for the info and replies. I feel like I'm spoiled for choice down here, plenty of roads to run it in on. What is everyone's opinion on the spirited run in? Seems like a good bit of sense to me, and a good bit of fun!!

I did a spirited 1hourish drive and I've had a pretty good run oil usage wise so I'd say it's excellent for the car. I suggest driving normally to your location of choice direct from the dealer (so it'll get warm - never run hard when cold) and then having some food before you start, to let the heat soak throughout the engine.

Ie. I picked up my Polo from Gold Coast VW, drove for about half an hour to the McDonalds at Helensvale, ate and then drove up Mt Tambourine and back down the other side to home. Oil temp was about 110c when I got out of the car and the smell of crispy rubber was profound

I've had a bit of oil usage (around 1.5L over 4500km) which I topped up myself and a couple of rattles which I've fixed. But those are minor things. I love my car more and more everytime I get to take her out for a spin. After reaching 5000km, the car feels so much better

BTW, what's everyone's normal oil operating temp at? Mine usually sits at 94c (manual says 90c) which is normal yes?

My Polo runs at an average of 95 degrees.

Don't be worried, I know I was but nothing came close to what I would get with the Polo. No regrets here, had it for 8 days now and clicked 1,150kms last night.

Not a drop of oil but I did follow gavs advice of a hard engine run in.

You'll get warranty, its there to be used if need be. Words cannot explain just how much fun and enjoyable it is every time I hop behind the wheel. Just the best!!

                    Just do it! LOL

I can happily echo these sentiments, I've done 5050kms now and not had any oil consumption issues to date. The only thing that I've done, was to run it in really hard once up to temp (I averaged a tick over 10l/100kms for the first 2000kms). I did have slight soot issues during this period however I did expect this during run-in. I had the APR ECU tune done at 2000kms and have had only good times since.

                      Seriously fun little car!

How do you find the APR tune? what is the difference in power like? I am thinking of doing this myself, or their cold air intake.

                          Boeta, LOVE your car too!!

Yeah, run it in hard once up to temperature.

Just seems way to odd that everyone running an APR tune, or even a tune for that matter, don't seem to be having any issues than those who are stock...

I'm going to tune, just afraid if there is a warranty issue and isn't granted due to finding out ECU has been flashed...

Each to their own Kez, I love the smoothness through the gears, it has created (although thats just my perception). But it feels much quicker...but its still pretty early on and I'm still learning

I was a huge believer in leaving the car alone... but changed my mind after Gavs giving advice that tuning can be very useful (not necessarily APR) for ECU mapping in general.
