Considering 2nd polo...

I have been looking for a new small car (auto - but not a gutless) for the girlfriend in the $20 - $25k range to complement the polo 77tsi but everything in this range seems to be a lower specced version of what otherwise might be relatively decent cars (focus, 3, i30, golf, cerato). As a result I keep telling her everything she is mildly interested in is rubbish and she is getting a little frustrated. I was never picky before i got my polo (89 corolla, 95 magna, toyota van) so I am not sure what happened...

Anyway I have suggested we get a 2nd polo maybe a GTI but worried we will regret having 2 tiny cars. We don't have or plan to have kids in the near future but occassionally we have to squeeze a couple of friends/family in the back and I must say it is a squeeze. Anyway keen to hear other peoples thoughts especially from others who may also have considered a 2nd polo.

On the other hand maybe I should let her make up her own mind even if it is to buy an end of the line (new model next year) cerato.

I have a 5 door GTI and aside from the boot space, inside it's got better leg room than my mk4 golf due to the design of the front seats. European families get around in cars this size, why shouldn't Australians other than the size of our waistlines

Slightly used Jetta? They have a boot as big as a falcon.

Update: Took a few cars for a test drive today and she narrowed it down to either a Ford Focus Trend Powershift for $24k a Golf 90 TSI DSG $26k (good price?) or my current polo 77 TSI DSG.

In general she is leaning towards the golf for driveability and interior asthetics and finds the interior of the focus too busy. On the other hand the exterior of the focus is less boring and gets a few bit more tech such as reversing sensors (prohibitively expensive on the golf imo). Another thing I noticed is that the rear legroom room in the focus was not all that much better than the polo which I found strange.

So basically our options are -

Buy the cheaper Focus ~$24k or the golf for ~$26k OR give her my polo, get myself a polo GTI and then buy a bigger (golfish size) car in ~2 years when we start thinking about expanding the family (and also at which time she will be a couple of years into her new profession and will likely be able to chose something she really wants/likes).

shes got to be happy.Theres far too many cars to suit the budget and size too.smile.

Yeah you are both right

To be honest nothing really excites her in the price range. I think she would prefer to wait until she is working again and can afford what she wants which is probably a bmw. Problem is her old banger is no longer driveable which is why I suggested she have my polo rather than buying a "stop gap" car.

Well!Its a chicken and egg situation.matters which comes first or die first and i think your generous suggestion of letting her have your car is great.smile
