  • Soot from exhaust - polo gti

    Hi there,

Just wondering if people are noticing moderate amount of soot from the exhaust. My car has done about 300km and I seem to be noticing soot all over the back of the car. Is this normal?

Also when I shift into manual or S mode, the idle seem to increase. Is this normal?

    Thanks for your help

To answer the second question first, yes this is normal.

Regarding the soot, some people have experienced it others of us haven't. What is your oil consumption like?

Only done 300km so oil is still fairly full. The first day i noticed some brown spots which I assume is oil. Since then it's just soot.

I have quite a lot of soot constantly on the back of my GTI. Just shy of 5000km's and I've just (today) done an oil and filter change. Consumption is okay, was at the bottom of the "safe" marking on the dipstick, and the amount that came out was pretty close to the amount that went back in.

Now that I've done the oil change I'll be paying pretty close attention to the soot build-up...

Car is tuned way rich from the factory so yes soot builds up on the exhaust and rear of car , especially in cars that drink oil like most polo GTI s .

Agree with you there Lock..although mine is fine and no oil consumption when i start it up the smell of petrol is overpowering for about a minute...way rich.

Get a proper Tune , however getting a aftermarket tune changing the factory settings in your ECU that can be identified by VW could void your 3 year warranty if you have any engine problems .

Thanks for the replies guys. So does soot mean future oil consumption problems?

I don't think it's related to excessive oil consumption, so no - it doesn't mean oil consumption problems.

So will getting an APR tune fix it?

A aftermarket tune will alter your air / fuel ratios , timing , increase your Boost getting you a leaner running car ultimately getting you more power and possibly alter your oil consumption , however i dont believe that a stock aftermarket packaged tune can achieve safe results for all cars .

I dont believe in a one tune policy that suits all cars , as we know not all cars come out of the factory with the same specs .
