  • Getting a mate to do some VCDS tomorrow...

    Hey guys,

I'm getting a mate to come over tomorrow to do some VCDS changes and was wondering what you can all recommend I do first?

    I already want to get:
    XDS changed... what setting???
    Remote windows
    T10 warning light disabled
    Steering assist changed... what setting???
    Brake Assist...what setting???

    Anything else anyone can suggest?

Whats this about remote windows? Are you talking about changing the functionality of them? They allready work out of the box with my MY12.5 - hold down the lock/unlock and the windows close/open?

I realized this when he showed me, I had no idea that's how it worked...

On another note I got him to change some things but they didn't seem to work he was getting errors. Looks like I've gotta go buy my own cables now. He said that he's only cost about $30 on eBay. What's the difference between his and the $300 ones. I'm guessing I wouldn't have gotten error with that one?

Biggest difference is that the real cables work everytime. Honestly, there is no substitute in my eyes.

Wtf? I would NOT be messing with settings, especially CAN coding, with a $30 cable. If your cable messes it up it will also not be under warranty. I don't know where your mate got this cable from but even the blatantly pirated VCDS cable costs something like $100. Seriously, keep the cheap **** away from your car...

If your cable costs $30 you should just be happy that it can even read your fault codes.

Funny you say that because I have a light error in dash and he couldn't read that error.

                Just a thought
The more expensive official cables are made of the exact same materials , likely exactly the same ? Yes these ebay $30 ones are knock offs but i would bet taking both cheap vs expensive apart they are likely similar/same thing

With a diagnostic cable all the work is in the software mate.

plenty of CAN-capable cables out there, probably less than $30 - hell even less than $10. What costs money is the labour that goes into reverse engineering all the coding and finding out what does what, documenting it all, making a software that allows one-click actions for various functions that are car-specific etc etc.

This isn't a fan or a lamp that you're buying. You know full well that if you buy Windows for $400 you're not paying for the CD, you're paying for the software. If you buy a $20 copy off the streets with a cracked version of Windows 98 instead of Windows 7, and it fails to work / messes up your computer, you know only you are to blame. The difference here though is that VCDS is not overpriced. If you compare to what similar official tools cost from the dealer, VCDS already = to the $20 copy of Windows except it's a legitimate, working alternative proprietary software.

I'm all for saving money but some things just really aren't worth the cost even if it saves you 90% of the price. If you really want a LEGITIMATE cheaper alternative you can try this: http://www.vag-tech.eu/ but don't expect to get the same amount of support, the user base for this cable is still quite small.
