  • Polo GTI Fuel Economy....6.1L Really...???

New to forums and first non newbie post.

I'm currently looking at getting one of these bad boys but have been reading mixed results on the 6.1L/100 combined fuel readings. I know the harder you drive it the more petrol your obviously going to consume but just wanted to ask what's everyones average tank lasting?
I am one to push the car from time to time but not a rev head like some. Also coming from a Honda Type R I've had the beauty of VTEC which requires some heavy throttling. I'm going to have to adjust to the 1-3000rpms rather then the 5-7000rpm.

I'm getting around 490ks per tank on 100% city driving, haven't really had the chance to take it on the highway. Not much thrashing as it's usually sitting in traffic.

Cruising around Sydney being light footed, I can get to 6.5L/100 pretty easy. Usually is a mixture of short highway stretch, 70km/hr roads and normal suburban streets, all with light traffic. Close enough IMO

I'm sitting on 6.6. That's including some fun twisty roads and everyday commuting in Melbourne traffic.

We're getting 7.6L/100km here in Canberra. Trips rarely last longer than 20 mins. 2 per day, 5 days a week.

Thanks guys seems like the 6.1L /100km is rather true. I was afraid it was false and people were getting 10L etc. Out of the 3 that I've driven I've seen 9L and 10L on the display screen.

Although its completely my own fault, I'm getting low 9's/100km (about 450km per tank) but thats driving it pretty hard.

Don't take what the demos say. They get driven on short trips, driven hard, and left idling for long periods of time and aren't that good of an indicator.

I've just hit 1500kms and including the 45L from the dealer i've used ~100L of fuel, so im averaging about 6.7L/100km - with a mixture of highway driving (where ive seen as low as 3.8L/100k on the MFD), and some very hard driving around my local streets.

                    Hi iigx,

Just to add these ones I've driven haven't been dealer models (bar 1) they have been privately owner so the readings I saw wouldn't have been from idling etc. One guy told me the MFD shows what your average fuel consumption per trip, Is this true?

Excuse me for being a n00b I'm used to having no display whatsoever so not sure how things are calculated.

Thanks guys and keep bring in the readings it's good to see such a powerful little rocket can save on low fuel costs.

MFD will show 2 trip readings. 1 is for the current trip you are driving, 2 is overall since you last reset it. I drive about 55kms a day to work and back an most of that is against the peak hour traffic on the eastern freeway. I rarely see below 7.1L/100km for each tank. At least it's consistent but it's consistently 1L/100km more than its supposed to be. Maybe because my car is tighter in the engine because I don't experience the reduced friction from ill-fitting piston rings

Are people including their oil consumption in the mileage?

Ha ha, funny you mention oil consumption with fuel Greg, m girlfriends dad just bought a brand new evinrude e-tec outboard which is 2 stroke but it's ecu controlled oil injection. That thing is using less oil than many of the gti's on here and it's made to burn oil!

my GTI has done about 17.5K, no oil usage, on latest MFD reading (18hrs) I'm doing about 6.4L/100km.
daily commute is 60k, up and down a range...I tendto leave home early and come home early or late to avoid most start/stop traffic.
My last MFD average for 100hrs was around 7.1L/100k
driving style is probably quite close to OP...a few squirts here and there, but generally cruising...
                              hope this helps
