I am very interested in buying a new polo and I wish I could drive the 77tsi but I can't due to p plate restrictions, and even if I get an exemption it will only be to go to work or uni which means I can't always drive the car.

So I've been looking at the 66tdi polo but after reading countless reviews and threads they all seem to point out there is a complete lack of power on take off, so my question is does anyone know of the best way to increase the power and make it a bit more like the tsi on take off

The Polo 77 TSI is classified as a 'Lower Performance Turbocharged Vehicle' under their rules. You fill out a different form to that of the 'Prohibited Vehicles' form, and all you need to do is provide details of the vehicle, sign, and that's it. The only reason why you need to apply for an exemption is more to do with policing convenience rather than a blanket ban on forced induction. Should be a mere formality.

It's different from applying for an exemption for a 'Prohibited Vehicle' (e.g. Polo GTI), where you have to justify in a million ways why you need to drive such a car - it's really these sorts of vehicles the legislation is trying to cover.

They exempt the 118TSI Volkswagen Group cars (Passat, Superb, Octavia, Yeti, Golf, Tiguan, etc) from the P-plate laws in NSW so why would they not exempt the Polo? I'm pretty sure you don't even have to apply but I could be incorrect of course. I see many P-platers on Polos; a friend at school has a red 77TSI manual sports pack and he didn't have to apply.

You do have to send in an application for all low powered turbos banned or not unless its a diesel in victoria, and with my previous driving record i doubt i will get approval

Oh... I see.

On the face of it, once you've served out your period of suspension (obviously no point in applying for one right now, since you can't drive), I don't see why it would affect your application - it's not like you're applying for an exemption to drive a 'Prohibited Vehicle' or something.

However, it would be best to ring them up and hear what they say first.

One doesn't have to apply, but your friend risks a suspended licence (7 demerit points) and a $441 fine, should he or she not be able to produce an exemption letter upon being asked to do so by the police.

As I've alluded to before, applying for an exemption to drive a vehicle classified by the RTA as 'moderate performance turbo/supercharged' should be a mere formality - should your friend wish to reconsider.

Well i DID have a polo tdi for about 4 or 5 months but soon got rid of it because of DSG problems. I thought it was a slug as well. I would look at seeing what they say about the 77TSI as I test drove that but made sure a fully licenced person was in the passenger seat to do the test drive. I chose the tdi mainly because I didn't want to have to fill out forms. I would also look at other cars as well as the polo too. Good luck with the car search.

I looked at a second hand Golf GT Diesel (good car) but I really wanted a first hand car because of warranty and insurance etc. After the issues of the polo I decided on a DS3. Very, very happy with that car.

Well done, and it's good thing you did, because they haven't completely removed that requirement.

yeah i read that. I was wondering if you could get the build plate modified by the manufacture, because if not wouldnt this rule only apply to new vehicles
