  • Car hit by lightning no damage however computer flash reset

    Ok so a synopsis.

Was at the Airport to pick someone up, was driving home via Qantas drive all i saw/heard in an instant was bright light followed by an immediate bang, my RCD510 unit flashed sort of like glitching and showed the "Welcome to Volkswagen logo".

Then my MFD in the centre blacked out for a good 2 seconds and lit up again all normal kilometres and speed reading (I hope).

Now a truckie who apparently was behind us asked if we were ok and since i was confused what he was on about he just said "You got hit mate by lightning".

So i drove on thinking...sh*t hope my car hasn't been hurt internally.

So the question is should i take it to the service centre or continue driving like normal since the warranty doesn't cover "Acts of God"?

I agree with HaydEN what are the odds of that happening to anyone? I'm not religious, but maybe its Gods way of *thumps up to the Blurt-O-Tron*

              hahahaha. gold!

hail, i'd take it along to a vw service center anyway - i hope that it continues to drive just as it has been before, but on a car as new as yours i would say it wouldnt hurt just to drop by and see if the ecu is throwing up any error codes as a result of the incident.

Just dropped the car off and picked up the loan car, CCC said they would need the car with them the whole day in order to check the vehicle thoroughly as well as finding error codes/gremlins in the system.

I like the new tiguan though

My 77TSI was struck by lightning last year...written off...struck at the antenna (blown right off)...no other visible damage but car wouldn't start and diagnostics found that modules were not communicating at all.

Upgraded to the GTI as they had one coming into the dealer so only had to wait a couple of months. I would have had to wait 5 months to get a like for like replacement for the 77TSI.

I would seriously get it checked out properly as you don't know what real damage has been done to it.

                    Good luck with it.

The car started this morning, and only flashed last night.

I'm going to be optimistic about it because i love this car and already put effort into it

I guess God likes to strike Volkswagens >.> Hope all turns out well when i go in this afternoon!

                          Lol thats gold!

Got a call from Chatswood and the car is fine they reset the computer and ran a diagnostic for error codes there was none that could be found, they inspected the car i asked if the aerial was fine to which his reply was "If it hit your aerial your car would of been f*cked mate and you would of had no antenna aswell".

So that would be logical as i was listening to a disc in the stacker!

No physical damage found on the car, all in all positive thinking has lead to a clean bill of health!

                          Stage 1 Godtune...hahaha...

In all seriousness I would be less worried about the car and more worried about yourself and the occupants of the car you had at the time of the lightning strike.
As a sparky we are warned about the implications of an electric shock and the effect it can have on the body for a few days after the initial shock. (not trying to scare here... ) People have been known to drop dead from heart attacks days after having recieved an electric shock as the heart had gone out of rhythm and then eventually stopped.
                            hope it all goes well.

Step dad is a former GP/Naturopath got the all clear last night, that was my first port of call but didn't think it would be in the interest of a "vehicle" forum to discuss that side.

I seem to be ok, blood pressure is spot on, he told me not to worry which is what i will do

Will have to ask my passenger though >.<

Appreciate the well wishes just glad the Polo could absorb such power...
