  • VW to discontinue twincharged turbos?

    Came across this article.

    Triple turbo engine | BMW | Mercedes-Benz | Porsche

"As car makers strive for more power and efficiency, however, the engine's complexity also increases, with BMW and Mercedes-Benz acknowledging a potential hike in service costs. Volkswagen is believed to be discontinuing its award-winning ''twincharged'' turbo and supercharged engine due to high costs and complexity."

I know it's all speculation, but if it's true, does this mean the Polo GTI?

With the advances in variable stator turbochargers that have not been adopted widely as yet in the performance car sector, they can create a cracker of an engine platform with a slightly larger engine + variable stator turbo combo.

I've seen nothing but issues with twin-charged engines after a year or two (sometimes less).

1.8L Polo Turbocharaged GTI.... mmmm sounds good bro.

Well there is the fact that it is a very unreliable and high oil usage motor.

Good riddance! the bloody thing has problems anyway.

I think a twin turbo charged golf/polo would be better imo.

Yes apples, it means the GTI.

CTHE is to replace the GTI's CAVE engine as of 5/2012, wether or not this will have the twincharged setup or not is pure speculation at this stage but one thing is for sure, it sure isn't the "cost and complexity" that is the reason behind discontinuing the engine. It is the inherrent issues that poor quality control and testing has neglected to pick up, namely oil consumptio (accross the model ranges) and things like the supercharger clutch squeaks.

While I like my GTI and don't have major oil consumption issues, I am already debating if I keep the car beyond the warranty period and even bother modifying it.

I've got the same engine in my Golf; I've been reading news about the new Mk7 Golf and it appears the model that has similar power figures to my car will be a hybrid. I guess the electric motor will effectively replace the supercharger. There's a thread with links in the Mk6 Golf subforum here.

This electric motor sounds like a KERS unit.

Gavs, i would trade in and get the new Mk7 GTI/R.

or if you can't meet said budget trade for the facelift variant of the polo

the people who create the business case for the polo gti (supermini performance hatch class), as well as engineers, had better be careful...

1.6T ford fiesta st MMMAAANNNUUUAAALLL will be the go-to hot supermini hatch car of choice, if the pricing's similar and VW can't sort out its dsg/ twincharger issues.

You think? Renault has the new Clio RS with a turbo engine and Peugeot has the new 208GTI with the Mini turbo engine.

Hail22 - have a google for the Jetta Hybrid.

looking at it and Formula 1 Technical forums, seems as if this technology has been adapted from the Formula 1 KERS unit used by Toro Rosso (Volkswagen is a sponsor of that team).

i think so - i reckon that the ford fiesta st is positioned to make a real killing in the aussie market especially:
                          - will likely have more impressive dynamics, not to mention more torquey drivability than the suzuki swift
                          - manual, so more of a ''bona fide drivers car'' than the polo
                          - given that peugeot has gone soft lately, people might be skeptical about the 208's capabilities. that, and even though the 208 looks fantastic, ford is a brand more people will feel comfortable in purchasing
                          - clio is gonna be sick, but rumors of four door only might put off younger buyers, as well as the fact that the clio will still be commanding probably at least an $8k premium over cars like the fiesta st / polo gti in the aussie market.

Swift sport is non-turbo and will be cheap (5 door). So any driver can own one - P platers included

We have no idea of the cost of the Fiesta ST... Ford will have to try very hard to get it here at the right price and will most likely be 5 door only. Release date is a year away. By that time a facelifted Polo should be out. Personally, i think Ford Australia may bypass the Fiesta ST and just import the Focus ST. Why? Unless they build the Fiesta ST in Thailand then Ford Oz is left with importing from two sources. Its one reason the Fiesta Econetic was dropped here.

Pug 208 should be a ripper, they have dropped a lot of weight out for the new 208. Makes Mazda's Skyactiv propaganda look like a joke
Clio RS should be good no matter what they do. I think 3 door ONLY is a liability in Australia. We seem to prefer hot hatches in 5 door format. Hopefully they have figured out how to make a car handle AND ride. The current model is absolute rubbish as a daily driver. The ride is appalling.

So what is the difference with the motor... CTHE Motor to replace CAVE Motor?
That is not the GTI motor either, is it?
