TDI engine accelerates at very low RPM.

Hi Guys,

This is my first (well, second) post. About six months ago, my family bought an ex-VW courtesy car, a Polo Mk V 1.6 TDI five speed manual and all is well except that in third gear at speeds under about 30, when the car is near idle in that gear and the accelerator pedal is not being touched, it tends to accelerate. The same happens in second if you go slow enough. I personally think it is the govener or something trying to stop the engine to stall but mum won't believe me. When it 'accelerates' the revs don't go past about 1,000 but obviously in a torqy diesel there is a noticiable acceleration. As I said, I don't think that there is anything wrong with the engine, but this is just to clarify that with mum. We have already asked the VW dealership and they didn't really help. At the same time the gear change indicator in the MFD says to change down, which is what I'd do but mum ignors that.

Any help or insight would be much appreciated.

Normal mate. My mk4 1.6 petrol golf used to do it too as an "anti stall" feature. If you want more clarity, maybe post in the golf section of the forum though, not the polo

Thanks for the fast reply. I would personally rather have a controllable 'acceleration' than a clunky stall so to me it's a good feature.
