This is a response i got from VW au

Rough running for the first 30 seconds upon start up when cold, is normal operation of all our petrol engines. This is called the warm up phase, where the engine will run slightly rich, for a short amount of time to heat up the catalytic convertor.

My polo ran very rough since last service about 15,000km ago, its only recently that this rough idle has smoothed out somewhat.......

Im with you on the engine not being as smooth as you want it to be but recently i was in a mazda 2 and the engine made the whole car shake, jumped back in my car and it felt so smooth and so much better

Even when the engine gas warmed up, the engine has a small rocking motion every few seconds, it's like when u turn on the AC. i just discovered a metal clicking noise on the driver side from the engine bay, hope is nothing major.

nothing to worry really, it's normal for cars to idle higher when it's cold, it's just with the polo the sudden change from idleing 1k+ to below 1k revs is rather dramatic

My GTI is the same, bit rough when you first start it up. It's just something you get used to!
