hey dan, what is available - got links to some you've been looking at?

as many bends as there are in the stock intake, short of a dry media conical filter housed in an enclosed/ heat shielded casing, facing straight forward with as few bends as possible, there wouldnt be many improvements you could make to the stock system - dont forget that the stock system has the best filtration, too.

      I did find this filter,

Revo Replacement Performance Air Filter for VW Polo Mk5 6R 1.2 TSI

Im not after any more power as a tune will take care of that, just more of a deeper intake sound.

I have the K&N replacement filter, slightly better audible turbo spool and whistle and a little teeper tone at high revs. Bought it just for the sound also and I'm happy.

have a pic of it compared to stock somewere

tbh the K&N filter in the stock airbox is good enough, because it's enclosed (legal) and it's got the air scoop going directly to the filter, can't really ask for much unless u make a custom pipe from the turbo straight to a comb filter sitting in front of the air scoop then u will get a loud spool and even more direct air flow

Is it easy to replace the stock filter?

done in less then 5 minutes
unscrew 6 screws around the housing, lift it up, unscrew filter, reverse and repeat

dont even need to disconnect the hose

top tip: dont drop screws or torx bit or its gone forever

I will use a magnetic head followed by having a petri dish to hold the screws
