also, when pressing the brake pedal too lightly will cause the clutch to slip all the time and possibly overheat

..........Actually the disengaging of the clutches is not based on brake pressure, but a brake pedal switch.

same effect. releasing brake pressure while still holding the car in place can result in the switch not being activated and having the clutch re-engage and slip

        I know mine does

I find my DSG gears down quite a bit when i am breaking to maintain speed down steep hills. Usually it drops as low as 3rd doing 60 - 70km/h causing the engine to rev quite a bit. I would have expected it to gear down maybe 1 or 2 gears but this seems a bit extreme to me. Normally I avoid this by switching to manual mode when approaching the hill.

I would appreciate other peoples opinions on whether this is to be expected or not.

I have noticed that also say i'm heading down a hill at 60 i'm braking to hold it there, drops it into 4th/3rd by the time i hit the flat it's revving quite 'high' (well above 4K). Seemed strange to me but I don't think its an issue really, would be nice for VW to give you a little lesson in DSG behaviour.

That's just engine braking, it saves fuel and your brake pads. Most well made auto's (and manual drivers) do it as part of the hill detection system (ie. they'll also kick down when you're going up the hill too).

When I drive my mums old commodore it annoys me no end that it doesn't kick down and I'm suddenly flying down the hill

                  Agree with reader0r.

This is the first 'automatic' car I've owned that is intelligent enough to do this. Smart machine.
