Owners thoughts on driving the 6R Polo GTI over long distances?

Hi All! Long time lurker, first time poster

After weeks of research, I'm planning to go into my local VW dealership to put down a deposit for the new Polo GTI! Very exciting

However before I do, I have a niggling question, which I doubt the dealership salespeople would answer honestly.

The question is: "how does the new Polo GTI drive over long distances?"

I will be traveling about 120km per day with the new car. Mixture of urban and hwy driving, plenty of stop/start traffic. From my readings, the ride is firm (as you would expect in a GTI), but for those that own one, does it become uncomfortable if you are driving for 60plus minutes?

Spending as much time as i do behind the wheel, comfort is important to me. I want to know whether the Polo GTI is comfortable enough for my long commute before i part with my $$$.

I've done quite a few trips down to Canberra, up to the Hunter, central coast and Port Macquarie and while after 4+ hours things start to get a little uncomfortable, 120km will be no issue whatsoever.

My daily routine involves driving to Ipswich from Brisbane, and back. About 90 km a day. Car handles everything, from stop start traffic to highway cruising exceptionally. Recently I also did a trip to Rockhampton from Brisbane and back... and Brisbane to Charleville and back. The GTI is just ready for service now (14950 km), nothing to complain about. I am just so happy I've done those trips in the GTI rather than my 1995 mx-6. Haha, you will love it.

Hi, I've currently got a VW UK GTI press car for a two week evaluation and have done 800 moles this past week. An hour and a half in the car is fine - it's very comfortable. Firm but not crashy. Do it, won't be disappointed!

The first drive for me was bringing her home to Sydney from Wagga Wagga. It was great. But ultimately, I think it is all relative to what you are used to and frame of mind. It can get a but tiring after about 1.5 hours as the seats are not as comfortable if compared to say a 3 series. They are snug an a little hard (Note: I am not a big person). Also after a long days work, if you are looking for a relaxing and quiet drive, you may be disappointed. I often go to the Gong for a full days work and the drive home to North Shore can be tough as the engine growls.

Otherwise, for a city and run around car, it is fantastic.

I drive from Olinda to Ashburton every day for work and the only problem I have with the car is it getting stuck behind slow boaters on the way up/down Mount Dandenong

I find the car really comfortable to drive, comfortable to sit in (I have the leather-type seats) and generally pretty damn fun..

Even though i don't own the GTI VW have made the Polo to accomodate for comfort, ride, performance , handling

but for the coin your paying your getting a better overall package, a highly recommended and reviewed vehicle yet all remaining at a very reasonable price.

For the config, performance, and comfort i believe its a great vehicle overall...except for the few problems being reported.

I don't find the ride crashy but it is firm compared to my Mazda CX7 that I got out of.

Again, it's all relative but I think what you really want to know is...

is this a dedicated sports car with all the drawbacks of one, or is this a polished vehicle with sportscar characteristics?

It is definitely the latter.

thanks for your input guys. in conclusion, it sounds like the polo gti will meet my needs, and i have since placed a deposit for a black 3 door, arriving next year cant wait!

We just drove our "new" ( 9500 K's) GTi return Brisbane to Sydney (two 1100 k days) front seats excellent! back seat passengers not quite so comfortable, but the front seats more comfortable at the end of the day than the start!
the hardest part of the trip was the speed limits.
this car is excellent, we are really, really happy with it, it makes the drive a pleasure and even helps to tolerate the "waking dead" drivers that seem to proliferate on public roads. overtaking is effortless!
our first water cooled VW and were gonna keep it for a good while, planning to get extended warranty. very very happy with it!

Some people have reported longer delivery times so it's possible mcbeef is still waiting

Car is great long distance, thank goodness for Cruise Control!

Only thing annoys me is the head rest, it's pushed to forward for me and my neck hurts after a few hours of driving....

Car has no problems going long distance. I live in Brisbane and I have driven it north to Rockhampton, west to Charleville and south to South Bruny Island. Efficient, capable and comfortable... mostly.
