Hi, i accidentally put regular unleaded fuel in my 2010 Polo 77TSI. I probably filled half the tank before i realised. Is this a massive problem, can i just fill it up with 98 and it will dilute or do i need to get the engine flushed or something?
Don't worry about it mate, this won't do any harm, all you will notice is a drop in power and increased fuel consumption. The ecu in the car will recognise that the fuel isn't what it normally gets and will adjust accordingly. If u want to be safe, whack in some 98, that will help to balance it out
In case of necessity, you can refuel with petrol 91 RON if petrol 95 RON is not available.
You must continue driving at medium engine speeds and minimum engine load.
Driving at high engine speeds or a high engine load can severely damage the engine!
Refuel as soon as possible with petrol of the prescribed octane number.
Even in case of necessity, you must not use petrol of a lower octane number than 91,
otherwise the engine can be severely damaged!
Bottom line, you can keep driving - no engine damage should occur provided you follow the above instructions. Keep the revs low, take it easy on the accelerator, and keep refilling with 98. You said that you only filled half the tank with 91, so assuming you filled the remaining half with 98, you will have minimised any chance of engine damage.
i'd fill it up to the brim with 98 and do it for the next half a tank just to be safe. (98+91)/2 will give you something close to 95. at least i think thats how it works.

yummy
A bottle of octane booster will work if you cant find or accidentally put in 91ron, most octane boosters (depending on brand) will bring the octane rating up 5 - 7 points (treats 40 - 50L) but the higher the fuel octane the less effect it has e.g. 98ron - > 101ron.............I normally take a bottle if going for a drive in the country as sometimes only 91 is available.........
