  • Polo GTi Future and Reliability

Ahoy all, I am new to the forums. After much deliberation i have decided to sit in line for many many months and wait for a new Polo GTI. I have been very content with my decision up until a few days ago when i started crawling through many sites and forums. I noticed a trend among Golf GT and Golf 118TSI owners having engine troubles.... My thoughts were not helped when i read the article about the retirement of the 1.4 twincharger engine.

long story short, how reliable is the 1.4 in the Polo GTI ?

For starters, i don't believe the retirement of the twincharger as it is in the new Beetle and 2012 Passat. But if it is the case and the 1.4 is to be dropped for a rumored twin scroll turbo, what engine could be in the Polo GTI 2012 model ?

This brings me to the second point. If Polo GTI gets a new engine, what happens to the 1.4 GTI's resale value? What i am getting at is, what are the chances of getting a car with a superseded engine while waiting in line. Yes, many hypothetical situations going on.

As for the current GTI drivers out there, have and of you had issues with the 1.4 twincharger ? I really love this engine, the punch from idle was phenomenal

I wouldn't worry so long as you consistently put good fuel in the car (BP Ultimate... maybe Shell V-power... avoid ANY other fuel).

The 118TSI issues were fuel related, mostly because the Euro cars experience much lower suphur levels in their fuel, and the early batches of 118TSI's came with ECU maps that expect fuels with such low suphur levels.

VW has since corrected the tunings on all twincharged motors.

Yes, the 1.4 twincharged is likely going to be replaced by another 1.4 with only a turbo. Much simpler from a maintenance and cost perspective, with a little loss in low down torque. Shouldn't hurt the resale.

I took delivery of my black 3 door GTI in January and I have a major problem, it's too fast.

I thought they didn't being in the 3 door version of the Polo GTi.

I thought the cracked piston problem with the Golf 118 TSi was due to the tune being too lean (to chase good mileage figures for the spec sheets). With that and the water pump/supercharger clutch issue, I wonder if warranty costs are part of the reason VAG are choosing to phase out this engine, as well as the stated production cost.

The new engines could easily produce as much power and torque as the current ones if VAG were to use twin scroll turbochargers along with Fiat's MultiAir inlet valve system.

i got a 118TSI and after worrying for weeks on end, i decided that i'll tackle the problems when they arrive. so far, my engine has been quiet as a mouse! cept the satisfying turbo sound when you shift higher in the revs. nice having no turbo lag at all too.

i almost got a blue 3door GTI. man, its the same engine but in the GTI its mighty fast

According to the rumours how soon is the twin charged engine being phased out? If I'm told to expect 2012 early delivery, what're the chances I get something different?

                Don't make me worried!!? >"<

Hey, this twincharged engine won a lot of awards and is technologically advanced. Great power, fuel economy and performance. I would think that it may turn into a classic one day and it would be sad to see it retired. Remember, like all production cars, you are going to get some faulty engines, it's just the nature of the beast. But overall, all I have heard are positive responses. You can even crank the little sucker to 155kw with an ECU upgrade, this engine had definite bang for bang

I am so glad I ordered my 3dr, this is the classic config for a GTI. 5dr is to family guy orientated...I am sure I will be getting a lot of flack for that

BTW, a new review of the Polo GTI is on PoloDriver | Everything Volkswagen Polo

Gti Joe I am 21 and single and ordered a 5 door...does this contribute to lowering the family guy average?!

Thanks also for the review...i think i google VW Polo GTI at least 5 times per day and the same old stories have been popping up for a long time now!

I have an ETA of Jan 2012 and am also concerned by the rumours about the twincharged 1.4 setup being phased out...i was pretty excited by the prospect of such an accessible car having such a high level of technology, especially with the 7 speed dsg. But there are two things i think are worthwhile pointing out. I read both Wheels and Motor every month and neither magazine has mentioned anything along these lines. They have always been pretty reliable with information like this in the past. Secondly, VW are hardly going to replace the current setup with something inferior. I guess we are in a win-win situation...if they don't change it...awesome! If they do...awesome, we have a new engine!

mr_bsr you landed on my thoughts exactly. I am set for an early 2012 delivery, if you can believe the dealers.

Perhaps thats why after 2 months of placing an order I have yet to receive an order number, or anything on NADCON. Perhaps they don't even know what the next polo will be and are just taking orders anyway??

                          CONSPIRACY!?

By the way GTI Joe I am 22, single and got the 5 door. The extra 2 doors are ... quite practical although I must say I do like the look of a 3 door one better.

That's exactly right Coolio, you will get a quality product either way. I cannot see VW phasing the current engine out in the short term as it's very popular and is fitted to other VW brands such as Skoda etc. Also, nice to see so many "new aged guys" out there as well Yes, it's a matter of practicality vs looks IMO. My wife wanted the 5dr just for that reason, however, she has her own car, so I won

im early 20's and went for the 4 door. I have lived with a 2door golf and i'm a bit over it I do agree the 2 door looks way better

As for the engine debate, i know they wouldn't do a half arsed job with a new single turbo engine. My concern is getting a car with an engine i have not test driven or the associated deprecation of a new car when its freshly superseded.
