IMO VAG wouldn't be in this situation if they just build cars to a set of specs instead of allowing customers to customise the cars.
They should build cars like the Japanese do. Have a basic model with no options, a mid tier model with a limited number of options and a luxury model with all options built in.
This would simplify their production line and allow them to build cars and stockpile them ready to ship out.Last edited by triode12; 06-03-2011, 10:45 AM.

You dont get it. Calculate ALL the permutations of 3/5 door, 5 colours, thenOriginally posted by Frostee View PostIMO the number of options is very limited as it is.
1. Comfort pack
2. Audio
3. Sunroof
4. Xenons
5. Suede trim
Thats a HUGE number of combinations and means that VW would be cautious about shipping standard cars out in significant numbers.
VW should make the comfortpack standard or ditch it.
Audio upgrade could be ditched or make a dealer fit.

I do actually get it. My comment was relative to other vehicles such as the MINI that I currently drive. The permutations for options on it is way greater than that of the Polo.2011 Polo GTI - I have it, I Love It!!!!

Being able to offer customisation would be good only if their manufacturing infrastructure was efficient enough to deliver the customised cars on time and on spec.Originally posted by blutopless2 View Postbut the available options is one of the many reasons i love Vdubs... get to pick and choose exactly what i want in the car and not have to settle for what they have chosen for me etc
We've all read stories of customers having their wait times extended (6mths or more) and some receiving cars with an option missing or added. We've also read of customers cancelling orders because of the wait and people who would've liked to own a VW but couldn't wait 6mths for them. So their current system isn't really working.
To have to wait 2 years (if ordered today) & pay a hefty premium for a limited edition supercar I can understand but a VW Polo GTI...? One would be mad to do so.Last edited by triode12; 06-03-2011, 10:58 AM.

this is all assuming that mistakes on options are made by the factory (and not the dealer entering the car config into the systems) and that the handling of options does cause any delay.
the biggest delay in the first batch of R's was the DSG gearbox, not any of the options...

i would not wait 2 years for a polo GTI either. But a wait of 6 months is certainly becoming the norm for VW if you dont want what they have here already (assuming they have spare cars of course).
Those that cancel a purchase etc should probably contact VWA and let them know. If they get 500 people a year pulling out of deals because the wait is too long then they may start to take notice. Just a thought.1974 1300 Beetle, 1997 Golf GL, 2003 New Beetle Cabrio, 2014 Audi A4 quattro

Hey all - so after being told to expect 2012 delivery despite ordering in mid Dec 2010, i went out and test drove an A1 ambition today. I must say i was pleasantly surprised! It has more options and is more customisable than the gti, which is important for me, and on road with a similar spec as the gti I ordered was about $8k more (it included a couple of extra options like wheel upgrade, speaker upgrade and metallic paint) which was better than expected. The Audi dealers are much nicer when it comes to negotiating as well! Plus if I order in the next 2 weeks, i'm guaranteed mid June delivery (which is fine b/c i'll be away for 2 months in May/June).
I'm seriously contemplating switching teams - $8k more for better spec, better badge and saving 7+ months is hard to say no too.
What do you guys reckon?

Lol well you wouldn't really be changing teams since VW owns Audi.Originally posted by burned View PostI'm seriously contemplating switching teams - $8k more for better spec, better badge and saving 7+ months is hard to say no too.

Btw, does anyone know the deal with cancelling orders? Do you forfeit your 2K desposit? Also who gets these cancelled orders? The person who ordered after you with the exact same specs?
Hmm I wonder...2011 Polo GTI - Reflex silver, metallic. Ordered 29th Jan, received 8th Oct.

You get your deposit bak, they cannot hold onto it because you haven't actually bought anything. Re the cancelled car, it still stays in the system, the next person who walks into the dealer wanting that spec will get the car,it's not like VGA can't sell polo gti's!sigpic

Of course they are... that's because they are often shared platforms with VW models and yet they're so much more expensive to start with... so there is more margin!Originally posted by burned View PostThe Audi dealers are much nicer when it comes to negotiating as well!
The A1 is nice though. If you have the money and like it, then why not switch
