Is the Polo GTI right for me?

Hi,

I'm currently trying to decide between getting a Polo GTI, Alfa Mito QV or waiting and getting a Honda CR-Z, although I'm currently leaning towards the Polo...

What fuel economy does the twincharger engine get in the real world? I've noticed a lot of the newer small capacity turbo fours use heaps of fuel when driven hard. I currently own a 2010 Prius, so fuel economy matters a lot to me. I used to have a Fiat Ritmo 1.4T, and the lowest I could get the economy was 7.3l/100km (0.2 above the claimed average), while I'm currently averaging 3.6l/100km in the Prius (0.3 under the claimed average), how close does the Polo get to the claimed average?

What is the DSG like to live with? To be honest I'd prefer a manual, (is a manual available at all?), does the DSG drive like a traditional auto or more like the robotized manuals from Alfa/Fiat?

test drove one, weeks ago, and on the system it says 9.9L/100km. so if fuel is your number#1 priority then gti isnt your toy, but then again you wouldn't buy a gti because its fuel efficient. Prius by far the best hybrid car out there.

city drive, if im not mistaken you get around 8L+ /100km, of course if did come with manual gearbox the polo would a tiny bit more fuel efficient.

Wow! 9.9l/100km is crazy! Although dealer cars are generally used for many short (ineffcient) trips and aren't run in yet, so I'd expect it to lower with everyday use; how many kilometers did it have? I'll keep the Prius for commuting to work as it's super easy and very relaxing to drive, while remaining very efficient in stop/start traffic, then I'll use the Polo as a weekend car as the Prius is hardly sporty...

Does the EU Polo GTI have a stop start system? Heaps of VW/Audi models have Stop/Start in europe, its a pity Aus misses out on it

If you are worried about fuel economy, the Polo GTI is not for you.
It will never come close to the Prius in terms of fuel economy. The 1.4TSI is a great engine but it can't beat a hybrid in terms of fuel economy.

9.9L/100km would be about right.

Buy an Eco Diesel if you want Prius beating economy, not a GTI. Check out the Eco Audi A3.

Don't buy any of the over-inflated price "eco" models. Just buy the normal diesel models and pocket the change.

I think the Ford Fiesta ZETEC will be available as a turbo diesel soon.

I personally don't really like diesels... Im thinking in the next week I'll go and order a Polo. I was more interested in what kind of economy it gets, I think with some hypermilng it could possibly get close(ish) to the claimed figures? But I'll probably end up driving it very hard...

Combined, L/100km 6.1
Urban, L/100km. 7.7
Extra Urban, L/100km. 5.3

is? Is that on the days the lead boots are worn? hehe

From my understanding, the 9.9L/100km was the reading in the car that the OP test drove.

It does seem odd to be talking about the Prius and Polo GTi in the same thread

I own a 9n3 gti and I get around 8.6L/100km and dad owns a 1.4tsi mkv gt. He drives it pretty hard and is always darting inside streets around Richmond and city and manages to get 7.5 or so on average.

I know they aren't the 6r gti but his golf is definitely heavier and no where near they high 9s. Ud be surprised how fuel efficient it is on highways. 3L/100km at 100. Wish I had that sort of efficiency haha

Corrrect.. its a test drive car that is constantly started from cold and then flogged.

Maybe for a fraction of an instant If it was true you could drive from Syd to Melboure on 1/2 tank.
