Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Need a "normal" car - new GTi or 2008 GTi?

I'm new here, so Hi to everyone.
I am soon to become single again so need a sensible car. I have one of the world's best-handling cars already, but it's a bit impractical.
I drove a Mk V Golf GTi recently and loved it, but it still costs more than a new Polo GTi.

Trouble is, the previous Polo GTI is available for a good price (2008, 26,000km for $21900). This can be tuned quite easily (it seems) to 200bhp.

So, which to buy? I can afford the new car, and enjoyed the DSG in the Golf. For out and out speed I'll use the Lotus. Just need a reliable, fun, practical car.

Can I squeeze a mountain bike in the back?

Hoping to try both out tonight, but a little knowledge from the Polo community won't hurt!

    Thanks!

    Kev.

    Hi there,

First off, ill tell u now that you definitely wont fit an MTB in the back you would be better off getting yourself the strap on bike rack type, or maybe a set of roof racks for it

at the end of the day, all of the GTi models are phenomenal cars. It just comes down to which one you are most comfortable in. Yes the Golf will cost more, but you get a more powerful motor, and they are a little more roomy inside (referring to 3dr here)

The new Pog's are awesome for the price, but depends, are you wanting a car right now? or are you prepared to wait for it? (will need to be ordered of course)

The '08 Pog only comes in manual, so if you are wanting DSG, I would be looking at the new Pog. Plus, you will only get 12mths of new car warranty with the '08 (unless you pay the price for an extended VW warranty)

If it were me, id wait a little while and choose the new Pog

edit: Pog = Polo GTi ...

You will fit a mountain bike in the back, depending on the geometry will with be a front wheel or both wheel off affair. I've had my hard tail and road bike in the back, my dual suspension needs front and rear wheels off to fit, but that's probably more cos of the seat post height, I've only done it once when I bought it when I was "only going to look". Or run racks, which I didn't have at the time as I'd just got it and needed to move the bikes.

As for which car, all personal, I'm happy with my 08, track it reasonably regularly and have made minimal mods to enjoy it. I won't consider a new gti until it's sitting there in stock and the transaction can be made on the day.
Track Car: 06 Polo GTI Red Devil mkII
      Daily: 2010 VW Jetta Highline
Gone but not forgotten: 08 Polo GTI

        Hi Injidup

        Get a Mk6 Golf GTI

I have had an Elise and a few other Lotuses in the past and TBH I'd rather have the new GTI it's a bloody great car.

I have sold my mountain bike but I'd say it would fit in the Golf with the front wheel off

I would LOVE a Golf VI GTi DSG, but they are considerably more than the Polo - remember this is a second car! Even a 2007 Golf GTi costs the same as a new PoG. There should be at least one PoG in stock in Perth...

Used late model Polo GTI for about $17k. If you don't mind the size.

I'd think about the Mk5 TDI, they can be fun too...

I'll try and get there this evening if I can borrow a car to get there in! Is a test drive possible?

Have been to look at two 2nd hand GTi's and a new one. The first one I couldn't even get a test drive! The dealer seemed annoyed that I wanted to also drive a new car before I decided. The car looked great, the service sucked. I went to Wangara VW and drove the DSG GTi, and it was really nice, but there was a newly-traded GTi turbo outside, and the price was right, so I bought it! The service at Wangara VW was excellent. I kept 5 of their staff behind until 10pm, just for a 2nd hand car, so I am very happy with their service.
All going well I pick the car up on Christmas Eve!

Is there another dealer like that up here in Brisbane. If so I'll buy a car from them
