Marco!! ! Which small car to choose?

Hey, Im recommending my sis get a Polo as its a great value little car (for the build/quality etc) over the Barina, Fiesta, yaris. Do people generally agree with this?

Some things about the purchase:

It needs to be cheap, and it has to be the DSG. We either will get the trendline with comfort package for $900, or just get the 77TSI mid range model.

I would not mind getting her the sat nav in it as a present, as her last car hasnt even got power windows, so as a 26 y.o (nxt month) girl who smashed through uni, and works as an accountant, I reckon she's earnt it!

So do you think the RNS-510 will work in a Polo trendline? Can I buy one from ebay, for much cheaper and it does everything like the stocka?

Is the comfort package recommended? Anything else i should know about the car, +ve's or
-ve's..

I do mate and I enjoy punting the missus TSI around while waiting for my R. They're great little cars.

I'd def go the 77TSI and option in comfort/sports packs. Though if she isn't gonna slow down for speedhumps or kerbs rims, skip the sports pack (plus saving ~$1500)

FWIW, we test drove the Mazda2 and it didn't come close. After the Polo test, she wasn't interested in driving anything else.

She likes a nice car but would never wait this ridiculousness that we have (6+ months) so we'll see If there out now for purchase.

hey rexman, long time no speaky.

i've test driven the yaris, mazda 2, fiesta auto (1.4), and honda jazz.

the yaris was pretty good- albiet it was the 1.3 litre version, so pretty ''gutless''. small boot, but the amount of space inside is HUUUUGE! i was impressed at what toyota could do with such a small bubble.

mazda 2 had a nice engine in the 1.5, but you had to push it to get the best out of it. interior wasnt as big or practical as the other cars mentioned above.

fiesta had the best interior refinement, but the dash was all kinds of wrong (50 buttons on it), and the auto 1.4 was slooooooow. people say that the fiesta chassis is amazing, but i doubt you'd ever be able to find out with THAT engine...

polo tsi- plenty of leg room for back seat occupants, nice level of refinement and timelessness, and the engine.... oh, that engine. the thing drives beautifully. i was really impressed with the flexibility and drivability of that 1.2 turbo engine. great get up and go, for the kind of fuel consumption usually only seen by diesels.

seeing as you havent mentioned the jazz, i wont bother with my review just yet, but suffice it to say, if it were my coin, it'd be a polo tsi, followed very very very very closely by a honda jazz 1.5.

I'd say Polo, but do the prices line up? For what a 77 costs, can't you get a base Impreza?

Impreza is a bit bigger car than Polo or Jazz.

Honda Jazz has very versatile interior and is cheap to maintain.

What sort of driving will your Sis be doing? All town, town/country or mainly country?

I'd go with Scott's impressions (pretty much my own except I haven't driven the Fiesta) and add that the Mitsubishi Colt with the CVT is an AWESOME town car (and cheap to buy/maintain and very well built) but very ordinary on the highway/country roads.

The Suzuki Swift is the other car in the class that hasn't been mentioned which is a decent drive, very well built and good value.

Just drive them all with her - it's fun.

Have a look at the updated Fiesta with the 1.6L plus 6 speed DSG combo. The Polo Trendline 1.4 will be glacial in acceleration.

Yaris and Colt should be replaced within a year. The Swift is replaced within 6 months and will come with a smaller 1.2L engine. So any of these should be easy to negotiate a good price. All have lame 4 speed autos though.

There is also the brand new Micra. Seems to get a very high spec for the price (eg, climate control and parking sensors on TI) and comes in lots of girl friendly colours.

Polo 77TSI is great...but your sister may get quite a bit of mail from the RTA as the car is very light on the accelerator peddle a bit of a touch at the start and she moves...so a few fines may come her way if she finds herself unable to resist the temptations of lead foot applications.

LOL I could mention that from all accounts Ford's version/tune (well, the manufacturer they get it from) of the DSG gearbox is better than VW. Smoother and less delay from a standing start.

We did wait May to Sept, not sure what the wait is like now but that was only because of comfort and sport packs. It seems that if you want one or the other, they have plenty of stock around. Only issue I noticed was a small crack in a rear door window rubber which I haven't got around to having sorted out yet. The missus was "fighting" with the DSG for a long time after having a manual for 7yrs but now rarely mentions it.

For what a 77 costs, can't you get a base Impreza?

That was the first car the missus looked at and drove. Coming from her 200k Mazda 626 its was "nice" but after the drive in the Polo she called it a bucket of ugly boring **** hehe. Space/size wasn't a consideration, just a nice new car around $25k

I thought Ford sourced their DSG from VAG

Volkswagen will eventually own most of the motoring world as well so i guess it won't make much of a difference.

ZF, Getrag and Borg Warner all produce double clutch transmissions (DCT)

The VW DSG is a Borg Warner unit.
