  • H.I.D. Anyone?

Has anybody converted the Polo Headlight to HID yet? or is considering doing it?

Aside from the wheels and the after-market rear parking sensor, this is the only other thing I wanted to do to my Pearl Black Polo. I would like to know if this would be easy and viable?!

From what I have read and seem from the engine compartment since I got the car, It does not seem difficult to put in an universal kit.

I would not do it myself though, because I am not prepared for the change in a brand new (2nd hand) car just yet...

Easy yes, but illegal and dangerous to go down the aftermarket path.

Retrofitting Xenons (HID) Lighting to reflector housings

Fitting the OEM units is the only way to do this safely but the cost goes up and so does the amount of work required.

Better to do a bulb upgrade to give better performance if you don't want to shell out the $3000+ to do a retrofit.

I followed the bulb upgrade path as Mav stated and it is more than enough.

I have learnt to live with so many 'illegal cars' on our streets already.

I am now exploring other possibilities, such as getting a high performance Philips Halogen for an hassle-free change. But from what I have heard, the OEM bulbs are often made of such high qualities that an upgrade is useless.

I guess I will just save this money for a set of new wheels...

I thought the OEM bulbs would be better than aftermarket but once you upgrade them it's a definite inrease in output and throw.

And this justifies performing a mod that is dangerous to all road users and reduces distance vision at night? You might justify it that way but it doesn't change that these mods are selfish and stupid.

?????? The OEM bulbs are good quality but this has nothing to do with performance. The OEM bulbs are made for long life not performance, if you bothered to read the links I posted they explain in detail why performance bulbs have a reduced lifespan and offer light output figures.

Tonight I will order some Phillips dimond visions, osram nightbreakers and Maybe one other bulb type if I can find a good one. I'll test them over a week or two and post some pics and my opinion and what doesn't go in my headlights will hopefully fit my driving lights :-p

                    Geez, chill!

I have watched a few youtube clips myself. And put "performance" bulbs in my old cars before...

And I was simply expressing my de-sensitised, as oppose to your strong emotions towards those "stupid and illegal mods"

Hey mat, there is a night vision from Phillips off top of my head, and I remembered it had 3 different coloured beams combined into one. That seemed pretty awesome. And they got a few HID look-alikes as well. Don't know how it compares in a POLO though.

I'm going to wait for the Germany companies/chinese companies to make ADR compliant units, been browsing and finding there is a lot of headlight units complete but with a LED DRL setings for the VAGCOM system.

So i'm going to take my time and wait.

new headlights is definantly the goal for the finished car, but for the time being, $43 for new bulbs isnt much

Compliance isn't the issue from memory.
The major cost comes with fitting, re-wiring, coding and making sure it is legal (self levelling system and washers)
Add this to the cost of the light surrounds (with projectors) and you are looking at around $4000.

Bi Xenons are one of the few factory options that it are cheaper than a retrofit.
