Any sales employee in the dealership should be able to pull up the info. If your sales person is unavailable ask to speak to the sales manager and get the info from them.

Whenever I have asked for it, my sales guy has either shown me the NADCON screen, printed it off or emailed me screenshots. Takes him all of about 2mins and is only too happy to do so.

As for insurance quotes, you don't need VIN or even delivery date for a quote. Every online quote I did for the Polo only asked if you already owned or when you were expecting the car. Just make it up. Its a quote, you don't need to be specific on the start date.

For the record, here is my story:

Ordered Polo 77TSI with DSG, Sports and Audio packs on May 6th.
Was advised on the day that build date was about mid July, they showed me the car on this list they had.
About the end of July, was contacted by dealer, build was confirmed and given VIN. Told to expect delivery about mid October.
Got a call late August that the car had docked and picked it up on September 9th.
Didn’t ask why they originally said October pickup, as I was happy to get it one month earlier than I expected.

From what I’m hearing, if you ordered your car around June/July/August, people are experiencing longer delays, but still, surely a dealer should have information on what’s going on.

        I have a build date

        Week 39, day 3, number 1145, year 2010

Does that mean the 39th week of this CALENDAR year?

That is correct Steve, and my advice from now on is to speak only to the Dealer Principal of your Dealership as they don't talk crap/put a carrot on a stick to get your attention only to drop you under a false floor. Speak to him/her about the car and you won't get led around the mulberry bush.

Also with Insurance mate i got mine on the polo with window option, tyre/rim insruace for $807 via My dealership with Allianz Insurance took all but a matter of five minutes, they seem to get quite a massive discount when they do the insurance quotes.

I recall seeing it at news that South African factory, where all 5 door POLO comes from is having a strike.

Don't think its a full scale strike, but certainly will contribute to delays.

3 door version is fine, as they are made in Spain from everywhere I have read!

Hi FJ Steve, boy do I hear you...
Can I suggest (if you are loosing faith in your dealer or they are not giving you clear/sufficient info) to contact Volkswagen Australia directly by filling in the on-line query form. Here is the link...Volkswagen Contact Us > metacontent > Volkswagen Australia.

I did this the day I called my dealer and found out the delay had blown out to 6 months. Not satisfied with the rather offhand manner I went on-line, found the 'contact us' section at the VW Australia site and went directly to the source. Filled in the form Friday lunchtime, got a phone call Tues lunchtime. Can't fault that service at least!. Anyway, the person on the phone had the database up as we talked and walked me through the stages the car had passed, and the system dates. They were happy to answer any questions I had, offered to investigate further into why the delay occurred. Still not good news for me, but it's nice to know there is an alternate avenue than just the dealer.

About 3 weeks ago, I put a deposit down on a TSI that the dealer had already ordered. They said that it's due 23/11 but I still don't have a VIN. Is this to be expected?

Did you ask for the VIN??? Some dealer might be lazy and skipped the process.

Happened to me, didn't get the VIN until I got the car, but thats because I am also very lazy at chase them up for it...

And there was no delay for me, so good luck!

                        aaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnnnnnnnndddddddddddd

another delay. Advised by VW Australia (this morning) that we would be lucky to see the car off loaded the ship (in Perth) before Christmas. Apparently production is delayed as they try to recover form an 8 day strike in August at the Port Elizabeth plant. VW source claims it will create a 4 - 6 week delay on all orders.

Now I'm starting to get pissed.

There seems to have been strike action in August and September - see attached link found on the net - so surely VW would know to moderate peoples expectations on delivery dates?. Call me cynical, but I'm hearing more and more about dealers taking buyers 'out of the market' to ensure they get the sale only to advise later of a production issue causing delays that would (or should) have surely been known?

we entered the contract in June. I don't think it is reasonable to expect the dealership to have known about the strike at that time. Also...my source is not at the dealership, but within VW Australia.

Point: The dealership have little or no idea about what is going on. There are same spec'd cars on carsales (Eastern States) as to the one we have ordered...but not in the colour we asked for.

I discussed the future of our contract with the dealership, with my wife this afternoon. Her immediate reaction was to get our deposit back and start the hunt again for another car. This is an option I was not keen on. She has now resigned herself to waiting a bit longer. Besides...she's happy 'cos she gets to drive the .:R for a bit longer.

This is a perfect oppurtunity since your cars are not built yet to speak to dealer principles with copies of the contract and negotiate for some special attention such as factory fitted options, i guarantee you there is a lot of people who don't even come on this forum who are like you guys.

Be heard, be Australian and get a good bargain for your loyalty, either that or VW might want to consider an on flow of (to the head executives) measly $28-32k sales which will add up to hurting the company at the end of the financial year.

started the process today....dealership got their first "heads-up" today. That's all I am prepared to say.
