However, I was wondering if there are any trade offs such as losing some of the integrated functionality that you might gain from upgrading to the oem RCD 510.
I haven't found any! Even if there was, the functionality you gain with a decent aftermarket head unit is far better. My unit actually supports a specific 32GB SD card, so I have my entire music collection on it!

I actually put it in this morning anyway, didnt want to drive to work with no radio and half the dash hanging out. I just had to drill some new holes in the cage. Pain in the ass but it seems to be pretty solid. Didnt use the copper tongues or metal plates.

Yep I dunno why you would pay hundreds of dollars for a OEM Bluetooth kit if you could fit one of these. I got the Pioneer AVH-P3200BT from the USA for $400 delivered, you do need the Connects2 bits and facia kit but they arent very dear if you look around. Mines the USA model so the AM is supposed to not work in Aus but it still seemed to in my car (I don't think it tunes to quite the right frequencies though).

What do you mean a specific card? Do some not work? I was going to order a 32GB one today.

Also regarding microphone placement - I found in my Golf it was really easy to drop the mic down through the gap next to the steering column then pull the cable up the gap and put the mic on top of the steering column, mounts right in front of your face then.

Took me five minutes to install the mic in the stock location (interior lights) then again I installed the RNS-510 and 730c bluetooth kit into the polo and it only took me probably 30-40 minutes all up. Why would you install the mic anywhere but the stock location? cable not long enough?

I installed the mic in the interior light location, I have ordered this one:

I can't use a mic from VW with the Pioneer unit as the VW one is active and the pioneer is passive.

It must be a class 2 32GB SD Card, the only one I found was this one:

Really? why? As far as I am aware the Class rating is just its speed, you would think higher speed cards would work. I was going to buy a class 10 card.

                YouTube - Pioneer AVH-P3200DVD with 32GB SDHC Card.MPG

I think this is the video, I am at work so I can listen. I didn't want to risk the money

EDIT: Oh, if you check the specs in the manual, it is only meant to support up to 2GB!

Yeah I know! It would be pretty pointless if it was only 2GB. Thanks for the link. I might just give a Class 10 a go anyway. It seems like it takes quite a while to read the card when you switch to it, if a Class 10 works it should load faster.

                  edit:
This guy has a 160GB 2.5" hard drive working on it!

Did you hook up a park brake bypass? Did you just connect it to ground or is there more trickery involved?

More trickery involved, not that I have of course done it

Just use a 5 wire relay. 86 and 87 to ground. 85 to remote turn on (blue wire) and 30 to parking brake input (light green wire).

EDIT: I think this is the relay I used: http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView...t&form=KEYWORD

Cheers. Was gonna go to Jaycar tomorrow morning to pick something up for work so I'll grab one. Not sure what 86/87/30 etc are but I assume its wired to connect the parking bake input to ground when the unit turns on and leave it floating when its off or is it vice versa?

When the head unit turns on, it sends out the remote turn on wire signal, which turns on the relay, grounding the parking brake The 86,87,85 & 30 are terminals marked on the relay.

The specific relay you are after is a 12V single pole, double throw relay.

Got it, I picked one up this morning. Will install next weekend when I'm putting in the rest of my gear (speakers, amp and sub).

Have you got a Polo or the MK5 Golf GT in your sig?

I've got a Golf as per sig, just posted in here because you had the same headunit.

Ok that makes sense. I was going to give you advice on running the amp wires in but it will be redundant.
