DSG or Manual?

Hi all,

First time on the forums, seems like a great community. I've had 3x Commodores now and its time for something new and better on fuel. Definitely liking what I'm seeing in the Polo.

So what are everyones thoughts re: DSG or Manual?

I've test driven both and i'm really not sure which one to get. The DSG maybe was a little quicker??? Just not sure.

Both seem to have the same 0-100 rating.

Thoughts?

i'd be thinking along the lines of a manual. yes, the DSG is going to be quicker and easier, but im not sure if VW have resolved any of the dsg issues that they had in the mk5 golf, and manuals are always going to be more bomb proof.

this is just my opinion, mind you, and im sure that there will be many people who will tell you that there is no difference in reliability.

go manual. more fun, and its more tolerant of future power mods.

that being said, dsg sounds pretty sexy on paper. im gonna test drive a 77tsi in dsg some time soon....... but if i were to buy one, it'd be manual. im stubborn like that.

Yeah I'm leaning towards manual as well, I also sit in peak hour traffic most days and manual still doesn't bother me haha.

What I want to know is what actually is quicker?
The 0-100 times are quoted as being the same, DSG v Manual, but I guess that assumes one can shift as fast as the computer..

That said, I can't see how the manual (especially once the driver has the hang of that specific gearbox) would be much slower than the DSG?

To answer your question "what actually is quicker?"

DSG = double clutch... hence it is humanly impossible for a manual car to go faster than the dsg, as it changes gear perfectly each time in like 0.3 seconds or something.

This will basically sum it up for you... the video is a golf R... but it does compare a manual vs dsg gearbox... which is the same in a polo YouTube - VW Golf R - DSG versus manual by autocar.co.uk

And in the video, the dsg does a time consistently faster and consistently the same time. Where the manual driven by a professional car reviewer can't get anywhere near the dsg time nor consistent.

At the end of the day, it is all about YOUR enjoyment of driving the car... BUT as a convert from never bought an auto car to now owning a dsg... it is pretty impressive, but i do have another car that is manual... so i don't miss manual as much.

AND also as you are getting a polo, which is a small car and relatively not that powerful, maybe dsg or manual doesn't really matter... and probably manual more fun to drive because of the small engine.

But yeah enough blabbering, just my 2 cents.

good point you raise, den- my 9n3 1.9 tdi pog is not powerful either [although the torque makes things a wee bit interesting], but with the narrow power band etc, having to use the shifter often.... i never grow tired of it.

makes for fun in the twisties, too, having to physically get in there with the clutch pedal/ gear stick, when keeping the tiny turbo on point.

DSG is quicker. Manual is more fun and involving for me. I've had my Dad's Golf GTI for four weeks now and will have it for another three and all it's done so far is confirm for me that a manual is for me all the way. If I had to sit in peak hour traffic every single day I'd think about DSG for a little bit and then the enthusiast in me would probably kick in and I'd get a manual anyway. To also add to it my Dad is thinking about a manual for his next car too (and he's had automatics since the early 80s at least).

Nevertheless, 1 second difference of 0-60mph is not an issue with Polo in real world driving. I don't suppose anyone is trying to drive it competitively?

To me, its just a great city car punching above its weight (class).

yeah for a polo, 1 second difference is not that big, considering it probably does 0-100 in like 10 seconds (guessing).

like you said, polo is a day to day driving car, so manual or auto doesn't really matter, personal preference really, the dsg doesn't really come into play.

We have the 77tsi with the DSG, we have always had manuals before that. The 7 speed DSG is a perfect match with the turbo motor as you always seem to be in the right gear and on boost. I nearly got the manual but am glad we got the DSG.
