I'm trying out another newer iPod tomorrow to see if that fixes the problem. Anyone else come across this?

yep... everytime... think its a known issue..
let me know re the new ipod... i am thinking of buying a new one myself as mine keeps starting from beginning everytime i start the car..

    • Update on my car:

Plenium chamber is rooted (awaiting VWAG to approve warranty repair).

Rear passenger door trim warped (awaiting VWAG to approve warranty repair).

Rattle upon cold start of the engine 2-3 seconds (escalated to VWAG due to incompetence from VW North Shore service advisor).

Clutch slipping / delamination issue (escalated to VWAG as per above comment).

      Name and shame?

Not at all, however if you have a vehicle to be serviced with VW North Shore make sure you suss the service advisor(s) as one of them has a serious weed up his proverbial and a bad attitude.

If you wish to find out the name of this advisor you can find out via pm (if your vehicle is serviced by VW NS (Sydney), I wouldn't wish this service advisor upon my worst enemy...you'd want to slap a leash on him and drag him to puppy school.

Yeah my other iPod Touch didn't seem to resolve the issue either. Guess it's just a glitch with the MDI.

On the outside it sounded like the engine was about to cut out when then lights dimmed (It wouldn't have, but just had that hesitation type sound). I thought I might take the videos to the dealer on Monday, unless of course I get info from people on here that it is normal and there is nothing to worry about.
Just an update that may be of use for others. I had this problem again so drove the car to the dealer so they could see the problem in action, it turns out there is a TPI for this issue (2029295/4). There is an issue in the wiring where the fan is connected to a relay that another component is, so when the fan is on full and the other component attempts to start there is a clicking noise and a flicker of the lights. The resolution was removing the ECY and checking connectors T94 and T71. Don't know if anyone else has had this issue, but hopefully it helps.

I have the same issue. there are about three TPI,s for the same complaint but three different issues so let us know which one it is.

I was cruising to work this morning (0 degrees) was moving away from the lights and depressed the pedal to about 50% to move past a slower car before the left lane ended I was in 3rd (drive) revs went from 2500 to about 4500 at the normal rate when it rapidly jumped to over 6000 with no drive. I quickly released the pedal. it took a second to change to 4th and drive resumed. First time Iv had any type of issue with the box so I'm riding it of as a glitch, but something to keep a eye on.

            • Just wondering if anyone has noticed when they turn their steering wheel the headlights quickly dim as if there isn't enough electricity for both steering and lights. Anyone else experienced this?

I made a thread about this a while back:

                • My partner and I noticed this too, although I thought it was just a small 'cornering' function or something.

                  • In other news so VW North Shore can't escape their incompetence, I've yet to have a return call about the TPI / warranty repairs issues as well as organising repair of my car due to their technicians bottoming out the car which has damaged my front splitter (right underside looks as if its been sand papered off!).

My advice to current owners or future buyers thinking of North Shore...find a different VW stealership.

I cannot escalate until I give them a chance...they have until Monday night...otherwise its "the suits" time.

                            diesel rattle?

Its started to shake at startup as well again. Used Caltex 98 from day dot, tried BP98 and stopped shaking on startup for first 10-30 seconds and now makes no difference what brand of fuel, someone said that vagcom can show misfires?

                            • its in-fact a carbon copy of TPI: 2027916-8 Constant engine rattling

it eludes to chain drive issues.

So...there is a fix...however VW NS is too lazy to either report it or cough up the paperwork for warranty works to be carried out as it puts them out of pocket with labour costs.

                              • Vagcom can show misfires (in the form of a fault code) but from what I can tell the computer averages the data it out before it issues a fault code. It's something like 20 continuous misfires in a 60 second period or something. I know this because when one of my HT leads went I could reset the error and it would reuse the cylinder again until about a minute of missing and it would issue a fault and disable the cylinder - sometimes it took longer because it would fire once and reset the counter.

The reason I think it does this is because if it counted every bump/knock registered from the knock detector then every time you change gears and the engine shakes it would retard the ignition and disable cylinders. This way I guess you get the best of both worlds...sort of

But it doesn't change the fact that even it missing once or twice here and there is not a good thing (I should know, when I hear mine miss, my heart stops - thinking another HT lead is about to die).

Apparently (I can't remember where I heard this though) these direct injection engines have a tendency to misfire here and there at idle (either its the direct injection system or something else) but people have reported that the problem disappears when a ECU tune is done (and thus ignition timing and the amount of fuel injected is altered)
