I own a 2010 Golf R DSG which my partner will tell anyone who asks, I LOVE THAT CAR. Because of my enthusiastic passion and her being quite impressionable she has taken a liking to the VW brand. So this evening we took a 2012 MY13 Polo GTI for a test drive. This particular car has <5000km on it. All was going fine until the current owner hopped out of the drivers seat to allow my partner to have a drive herself. While out of the car, he thought he'd demonstrate the feature of the key fob that when pressed and held on lock, it closes all the windows and sunroof. That feature worked fine but when she got into the car, started it and drove down the road, the dash display came up with the message, "Safety Lock" with a little flashing spanner next to it, and the car would not change up past second gear, even when selecting manual mode and attempting to shift with the gear shift lever. I asked her to pull over and when she did the message took up the entire screen rather than just the top line and included the message, "refer to owners manual". I asked her to turn off the car then restart it. Surprise, surprise, the message went away and then it shifted gears without a problem.
Knowing how many DSG issues and engine troubles Polo's AND Golf's have had, I'm concerned that there might be a problem with the gearbox or engine. I didn't get the opportunity to check the owners manual as we were pressed for time, so I apologise if the issue lies with the fact that the owner was messing around with the key fob. He assured us that this is the first time that has ever happened but we're not yet convinced.
If anyone else has been through the same issue, please let me know what the outcome was, either serious or quick fix, or even better no real issue at all.
I definitely don't want my partner to buy a lemon.
Thanks in advance.
Could also get a 77tsi and some good bits (tune, springs, exhaust) with the money left over?
It certainly seems like everyone is experiencing a lot of problems with these cars. Such a disappointing thing, it was lovely to drive. Yes, the little spanner did flash on and off where the "P" is displayed in your picture. Could it have something to do with the fact he was messing around with the locking/unlocking buttons on the key fob prior to starting the car again? It's still got two years under warranty, that's got to count for something, right? Many thanks to everyone who's responded by the way, much appreciated.
So just had a look through erWin as I'm currently on an oil consumption test and not happy with my replacement DSG. Here's what I've found:
1. There is a software update for the DSG (released 22 March 13) that is for people that experience the car juddering when pulling away and the gearbox getting stuck in 2nd gear and the gear display is flashing.
2. Rattling noises from the engine for 2-3 seconds after a cold start. Initially, when this was first released it was classified as 'normal operation' as I remember reading it (cause mine does it). However, this was updated on 23 March and it now says that it's a brief malfunction of the camshaft positioner from engine number CAV_213 442 and that they replace the positioner.
I've got a couple of others printed out (oil consumption and DSG) so inbox me if you want a PDF copy

I have been asked to bring my Polo in today due to get this update, even though I am not experiencing any issues with my DSG.
I will also be getting Oil top up, and my bumper fixed. Also asking for pricing for oil filters.
Just brought my 2011 77tsi DSG for it's 30k service at Chatswood Classic VW. I mentioned to the service manager that I was experiencing some/occasional "shuddering" when accelerating from the 1st gear or when the car is in an incline. Apparently the diagnosis is that my clutch has "worn out prematurely" and will need to bring the car in when the replacement parts arrive.
I would like to know does anyone have similar experiences? Is this "new" clutch going to last because I'm in my last year (3rd) of factory warranty.

Mate, really you should use search because you would have found out that there are sooooooooooooooooo many of us that have had new clutches installed it's not funny. Will it last? Ask nomadx38 or prcurrie how many clutchpacks they have been through
Mine however is still good so maybe I didn't get the sh*t software update that they did which ruins the clutches. I also don't do that much peak-hour driving in traffic, I go against the traffic
