If you had a dsg I would have instantly said that but because you have a manual id be more inclined to look at the fuel lines and AC lines as the source of the rattle, as highlighted dozens of times before.

What MontVolks has highlighted is more than likely the dsg issue of the mechatronics unit preselecting 3rd gear. In some units the solenoid isn't overly tight and it all just rattles around. Signs of a potentially failing mechatronics unit.

    • I'll look into your first point. Although it doesn't seem to be quite like the fuel and AC lines that everyone else has talked about, I have experienced one first hand. I'll try and get a sound clip/video of what it sounds like when it does it stationary. Definitely feels like it is on the passenger side of the car.

MontVolks has a manual too so that rules out the DSG issue. My issue is usually happening at lower rpm under reasonable load (typically inclines) in 2nd and 3rd.

It could be something simple or normal and maybe I'm wrong. I'm new to all this kinda thing. Thanks for any help in advance!

        • Hey TSI Dan. The rattle you have is the control rod for the waste gate actuator. Go to VW service and ask for the 24v9 Recall Service Campaign. They put a shim in between the turbo and the mounting bracket to put more tension on the rod to prevent it from rattling under sharp acceleration. This will stop the rattle when sharply accelerating . Please note that after the recall you might still have a rattle but of a different kind. It only appears when the DSG (or you in this case) fails to kick back a gear and falls below 1200rpm. The rattle there is the waste gate fully open so that the turbo can spool but it's harder to hear and has more base to the sound unlike the sound you have which is a high pitched metalic sound.

            • Hey guys just wondering if anyone can shed some light I have a 2012 VW Polo 77TSI DSG (which I love) but over the last 2 weeks it's been playing up.......The other day I was at the lights turning right and went to go but the car felt like it had no power like the turbo wasn't kicking in, Another day it surged like it was running out of gas (with a full tank I might add) and then stalled on me. One day I had it stall on me about 3 times on the way to work and I live 10 minutes drive away if that! I bought the car with 1700kms and it has now done 3000 roughly. Ive had it at Barloworld in which they replaced some acutator thing not quite sure the invoice is in the car and now I have it sitting back at Barloworld waiting to be fixed again. Does anyone have any idea of what it could be? Cheers, Seddon

To the guy who stopped beside me on Stirling street asking how my car is, how much oil it chews and has the engine blown up. I would definatly buy a Polo GTI!! Maybe the MY13 with new black rims as it'll have new engine build?! I don't regret buying my Polo at all! hope you join the forums!

                  • I have a rattle in the back which I can't find. Any bump and I hear it.

It's worse once the back seats have been down and then they are back up.

                    Thoughts anyone?

                    • I think you have the same problem I had. I'm pretty sure it's the latch for the rear seats (the double not the single) that rattles against the hook welded to the car. I put some felt tape over the metal hook to make it latch on tighter. So far so good haven't heard it since so I assume that was the issue.

Yep, nomad got it. The other one to watch for is the polyfoam insert that holds all the tools etc rubbing away, that's like a very quiet ticking and I only found out what it was after doing my resi delete and taking out the shelf in the boot

If your rattle sounds like a clicking sound coming from both sides (almost like morse code) then I have a similar problem, VW techicians have been in the car and believe its coming from behind the trim near the rear setbelts. They are taking it back to have a closer investigation in early January the car is booked for 2 days. and they are giving me a loaner.

                            • Change your oil mate, the castrol stuff is rubbish and my car which burns next to nothing absolutely loves drinking the Castrol Edge Professional Longlife 5W30.

Fuchs is my next trial but Liqui Moly Top Tech 4200 is my current brand and works well.

Is the stuff VW uses Castrol under the packaging? Because if so, I think you may be onto something...

I recently had the breather hose replaced, and the consumption seems worse - but I imagine the dealership would have topped it up with their VW LongLife III (IE: Castrol...?)

Now that you mention it, my oil consumption seemed to ease around the 5 or 6k mark when I could no longer be bothered going to the dealership for top ups and started using Shell UltraSuperDuperExtraCalifragilistic Helix - whatever they call the VW compliant one...

                                Hmmm...
