  • MK5 'New' Polo pricing calculator

    Hi everyone.

I put together a spreadsheet to calculate the costs of buying a new Polo for my wife (which I did yesterday).

    MK5 Polo Pricing Calculator v1.2

Originally this spreadsheet was fairly simple, but I thought I would expand it and turn it into a tool that can be used by anyone in any state or territory in Australia to calculate the 'Drive-away' cost of a New Polo (MK5). Plus, being an engineer and scientist I like to play with figures and calculations......

I have had to make a few estimations in the calculator, such as for CTP insurance for NSW, QLD and SA, but the figures in the calculator won't make much difference either way.

As the directions in the spreadsheet detail, simply select the car (1.4 Trendline, 1.2TSI Comfortline or 1.6TDI Comfortline), select the state or territory for which you wish to calculate costs and choose your options (the options displayed will vary depending on the car chosen) - then just read off the drive-away price.

I have had to include a standard 'dealer delivery charge' of $1495, which, according to my research should be the 'norm' for cars of this price range (from VW dealers, at least).

There are no allowances for discounts in the spreadsheet, as that avenue is fruitless - due to the car being 'brand' new (as I have discovered).....

If you're interested in purchasing a new Polo then take a look at the attached spreadsheet - I hope it helps any interested parties with their decision-making process!

    Best wishes.

    Josh.

Your spreadsheet is inaccurate. Firstly, the Dealer Delivery in WA as recommended by Volksjwagen is $1,995. Secondly, WA Stamp Duty is calculated on the RRP of the car only, not the extras. RRP for 19,990 is $549.70.

          You're welcome Astro and noone.

Dermot - sorry for the mistake. I've just put together this information in my own time to assist people with getting an idea of the drive-away price for a new Polo. I don't profess to have all information correct and have even mentioned that in my first post that some information is estimated (such as dealer delivery). Thanks for taking the time to respond to my post and correct the mistakes in my spreadsheet.

Please see the following link for an updated version of the spreadsheet which changes the dealer delivery for WA to $1995 and the stamp duty calculation to vehicle cost only.

          MK5 Polo Pricing Calculator v1.2

I've also changed the link for the file in the first post to ensure that the 'wrong' version isn't being further downloaded.

If anyone else finds any errors with the spreadsheet feel free to let me know. Even though this tool is simply intended to be an assistant, I would still like the information to be as correct as possible (a few $ here and there isn't going to make a huge difference, but $100's will)....

There is a drive away calculator on the Volkswagen website also, which is accurate for each state.

Indeed there is, but it doesn't have any provision for options, which can significantly change the total price (at least in states other than WA, where stamp duty is calculated on car + options).

I thought it would be convenient to have a tool that would provide a price including options so that I could see the price based on different combinations of options without having to recalculate the figures each time.

Plus - I like playing around with Excel and this was an excuse to do so...

The driveaway calculator on the VW website doesn't match the price list at the dealership in NSW though. It's about $3-500 out. Dealer delivery on the pricelist given to me by the dealer yesterday at Parramatta has Dealer Delivery at $1995 too. I'll scan the pricelist for the polo and add it in...

Dealers hate people having access to these calculators. It takes away the smoke and mirrors.

Thanks for uploading that image cjeff.

I've included the changes in the stamp duty calculations and dealer delivery charges in the most recent version of the spreadsheet (v1.2) as follows:

                        MK5 Polo Pricing Calculator v1.2

I've also updated the previous links as usual.

Astro - thanks for providing the link. You'll need to update that now though, as it is now v1.2 (and will likely continue to change....)

                            Thanks for providing this.
I find it very useful. I made one for the Golf GTI which others found useful.

As people have noted, the VW Website does not include options. It also doesn't give a breakdown of what cost is the dealer delivery, registration, ctp, and plates. This means that people are not able to accurately calculate what the cost of the car is. These spreadsheets allow that accuracy - especially if the user puts in rego/ctp/plate costs etc that are relevant to them.

Just make sure you UNDERSTAND what it is that you're doing though. I've found that most people have confusion over exactly how the final car prices are calculated! MK532 is obviously finding out that things are different between the states as well

This is a great service Josh. Can I suggest moving the excel file to google docs. It's very good at sharing the document without having to re-download each new version and it keeps you as the owner and editor.
