Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

    Rims/wheels 66tsi

    Hey all,

    My partner and I recently bought a 2015, VW polo 66tsi. It’s used as a daily because the other car is a Liberty GT with some modifications and it eats fuel. I was recently driving the car through the Tenterfield range which is a curvy hill road and it can do with wider and stickier tyres (plus many others but that will defeat the purpose of a daily). The current wheels are stock Steelies with covers and all terrain tyres, they are pretty gross. I attempted to put the Liberty rims on because they are 5x100 but the centre does not fit the liberty rims because it is smaller.
    It was different seeing how VW have designed the hub assembly and uses lug bolts. I am hoping to see what others have done and can help in pointing me in the right direction for a nice fitment of wheels and tyres.
    I will be searching the forum so I can learn stuff about the car.

    Look for a set of mags Mine has 215/55 s on it

    AT terrain tyres are for off road unusual to have them on a Polo usually H/T

      look for a set of 16" alloys on ebay or gumtree. You should be able to get a set for around $400-$500 with reasonable tyres.

      you can also get 17" but i think 16" is the sweet spot on a Polo

        Dont go more than 25mm larger as they will be illegal in some States inc QLD and not wider than a certain amount either

          You’re right there Brad. I’d love to get a set of 16” off a wrecked Urban + to replace the 15” on my 81TSI. The size looks so right & the 215/45 tyres a real improvement on the 185/60

            That's not quite correct. It's =15mm over the largest tyre diameter fitted and -15mm under the smallest tyre diameter fitted (-25mm in QLD). The OP could go to a 19" rim if he desired tyres that resembled rubber bands and bad visual proportions.

            Max width is generally 25mm wider than the widest optional wheel fitted, so if you have a poverty pack Skoda with 6" rims you can still fit 8.5" because the vRS had 7.5" rims.

            As you said, the rules vary slightly from state to state, so best to check on the local state website.
