  • Polo GTI 6C - Sudden loss of power only at cold start.

    Hi fellow GTI Owners,

I have a 2017 Polo GTI manual with approx 20000kms. I don’t really remember a time hat this issue didn’t happen!

I have a weird issue that only occurs at cold start. Basically if I don’t allow the car to warm up to the point the idle drops to normal RPM then I drive off and apply sightly more throttle than considered “normal” my polo feels like it’s losses sudden power and jolts almost the fealing of a misfire without a bang! When the car is warmed up to the point that the revs drop down to normal idle before I drive off, I never have this symptom..

    Anyone experiencing similar issues?

    Your helps appreciated!

    Rob

Me too. Well, it only happens with very light throttle.

It could be that you are exceeding the programmed throttle opening limit for insufficient engine temperature and the ECU is implementing cold engine protection.

Hmmm, That was one of the symptoms I had with my MY 2017 Polo GTi from brand new.
I also had problem with going over speed humps and jerkiness at really light throttle settings, used to feel like the car was miss firing on one or more cylinders. Had VW Mechanics look at it and was told they all do that! After three month of putting up with it, took it back again.
Got the VW workshop head mechanic to do the test and he identified the issue . Was a faulty turbo with impeller bearings that had enough clearance that it allowed the impeller blades to contact the turbo housing. Was the third turbo replacement they had done under warranty! Mechanic showed me the faulty item after removal and he was 100% correct.

Car runs much better and absolutely no hesitation on take off when cold. May not be your issue but I recommend you try the speed hump test. A batch of GTI's delivered to UK had the same issue. Edit1. Forgot to mention, my GTI is a manual and was part of the first MY17 batch delivered to Aust.

My 2016 manual GTi does this only intermittently. VW checked my throttle body and throttle position sensor. All clean. I am starting a process of elimination say, if it happens more with the air con on, or stop/start not deactivated.
I reported this when my car was serviced a month ago, so they have a record of the car doing this BEFORE the warranty expires.
My opinion it could be down to software or crappy actuators or butterfly in the throttle/control valve. Possibly something to to with the automatic choke also.
