Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Passat 206TSI with new wheels

    Hi all

Like the car, not so much the wheels, so I upgraded. Happy to hear your thoughts.

    Full specs are ...

    Rims: VMR V701 Gunmetal 19x8.5 ET45 Hub 57.1
    Tyres: Michelin PS4 19x245/40

Both chosen after a lot of research and lingering on too many websites.

I agree but I’m still with the stock rims as my wife has no interest.

Those look great, and good work getting some 245 wide PS4s on them too. I do think a darker rim works well

Thanks Jimi ... I'm still getting used to the rims myself but do think they look great on the move.

Am impressed with the PS4s. Somehow they manage to combine an improved ride with better turn-in/grip. Tho the ride could be due to the slightly taller tyre and lighter rims. The PS4s are however just a little noisier than the stock Pirelli's.

I'm taking my VMR 710's off today and putting the stock wolfsburg rims back on with new Sports Contis on them. Was line ball between the ps4 and the contis.

The VMR are a nice wheel.

Looks good XM640. How do you find the new tyre size? Any issues with rubbing etc?

              Hi jdw

my research put rims into 3 broad categories; sub $400 for 'no-name' Asian copies; known 'name' brands start from around $400 and you can easily double that for ultra premium/forged rims. New or near new 2nd hand OEM rims also command big $.

As my pockets were not that deep I was really attracted to some Asian copies of recent Audi RS6, RS4, S4 style rims. You'll find many examples advertised on Gumtree/Ebay, but most of these required a hub ring to fit. I decided to play it safe and get a 'name' brand wheel.

Beware the plethora of rims to suit Golfs. These often have ETs of 48-50 which, on a Passat, will visually move the rim too far inward IMO.

              Hi obsolete

No I have not had any issues with tyre rubbing but, as I increased both the rim and tyre width, getting the ET right was probably more important.

If your asking whether the stock 19 x 8" rim (ET44) with a 245 tyre will not rub, absolutely!

Thanks XM640, that will definitely come in handy when it comes time to replace the tyres!

What tyre pressure are using? I recently upgraded to 245/40 R19 from 235/40 R19 on the stock Verona wheels and finding that I need to run much higher tyre pressures. Currently running 42 PSI all around.
