Passat 140TDI Highline tyre replacement (235/45R18)

Hi All,

Vehicle: 2016 (MY16) VW Passat 140TDI Highline Wagon

I have just replaced the OEM – 235/45R18 94W Continental ContiSportContact 5 (ContiSeal) tyres at 25,000kms (all four (4) tyres were on the Treadwear Indicators)...
As these are quite soft, I must admit the tyres have been pretty average for the past 5,000 - 10,000kms.

Here was my choices for replacement tyres (in no particular order):

Pirelli – 235/45ZR18 94Y P Zero / 235/45R18 94W P7 Cinturato (seal inside) (Romnia) / 235/45R18 98Y XL P7 Cinturato (China)
Dunlop – 235/45R18 98Y XL Sport Maxx RT 2 (Germany)
Goodyear - 235/45R18 98Y XL Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 (Germany)
Bridgestone – 235/45R18 98Y Potenza RE050A / 235/45R18 94W Potenza RE050A / 235/45R18 98W Potenza RE003 (Japan / Poland)
Michelin – 235/45R18 98Y Pilot Sport 4 (France / Thailand) (No rim protector)
Continental - 235/45R18 98Y PremiumContact 6 / 235/45R18 98Y ContiSportContact 5 / 235/45R18 94W ContiSportContact 5 (ContiSeal) (Romania / Slovania)

I had been procrastinating for the past 2mths, but during that time I narrowed it down to the Dunlop or Goodyear. I went with Goodyear as I have the same tyres on my Jetta and have done 20,000kms in 2yrs and they still feel like they are 75-80% tread left!
I did not want to get Continental again and have had very poor experiences with Bridgestone (they wear super quick too, however they then feather and become SO NOISY). That did not happen in the Continentals thankfully!
I have never used Pirelli in the past, so was not super keen on them.
But, I have generally replaced tyres with Michelin in the past on previous VW's. So would have gone with the Michelin Pilot Sport 4, however they do not come with a Rim Protector in the 235/45R18 size... so I dismissed them!

Goodyear/Dunlop Australia were waiting on fresh stock (there was Zero availability in the country) and although it took about 2mths, I finally got them installed yesterday; Goodyear - 235/45R18 98Y XL Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 (Made In Germany).

As per the EU Tyre Label;

Goodyear - 235/45R18 98Y XL Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 (C - Fuel Efficiency / A - Wet Grip / 69dB Noise)

The original equipment Continentals;
Continental - 235/45R18 94W ContiSportContact 5 (ContiSeal) (E - Fuel Efficiency /A - Wet Grip / 71dB Noise)

The original equipment Pirellis;
Pirelli – 235/45R18 94W P7 Cinturato (seal inside) (C - Fuel Efficiency / A - Wet Grip / 70dB Noise)

So the Eagle F1's have much better results than the OEM Contis...

I run between 38 - 40psi and check this every couple of weeks.
The wear rate of all four (4) tyres was very even, so no issues there.
I had a wheel alignment / balance / rotation at 6mths (the car has only been on the road for 1 year now)...

A big shout out to Dunlop Super Dealer (Apache Wholesale Tyres Rocklea) who helped me source / order and fit the new Goodyear tyres!

If anyone else is in the market for this size tyre, I know they have a second set of four (4) tyres avaialble and will surely offer you a great deal. They did for me!!!

I’ve had a few sets of the Goodyear Asymmetric 2’s and they were a great tyre in terms of grip and mileage.

Can I add in Toyos Proxes C100+. Nice tyre, good grip, reasonably quiet and great price. Not seen as a premium performance tyre, but wears well (I travel 35K+ a year). I had them on my Superb, Golf, Octavia and old Passat. Just as an option for you.

Hi NPR, I am sure the Toyo are a quality tyre. However they where not on my shopping list...
(also, the Proxes C100+ are not available in 235/45R18 )

This thread is not about tyres in general, just the 235/45R18 to suit B8 Passat with the Genuine 18" (Dartford & Monterey) Alloy Wheel.

They have the same treadwear rating as the 235/45R18 of 300, so I expect the wear to be similar.

So still getting around the 30.000 ks per set? I ask as I’m looking to find a Tyre that will give better mileage than the 30.000ks.

Maybe not totally related but I've been running Pirelli P Zero 225/35 R19 on my Octavia since new and after 46,000 km they still look to have about 50% tread left. Not the grippiest tyre for the first 1-2k but after that have been great. To be fair half of my driving is highway running.

Traction versus treadwear- the two are basically, mutually exclusive. Seems VW fit rubber from the factory that has high traction.

on my Alltrack I’ll be erring towards treadwear when it’s due for new boots. Same with my wife’s B8. We don’t drive them hard - certainly nowhere near hard enough to warrant soft high traction tyres.

Now, our motorbike on the other hand....we stuffed a set of tyres after one trip on the weekend. About 800km of Tassies finest west coast coarse chip roads and the hoops are almost buggered. Glad I get better wear than that from the car tyres

Hey buddy,Ive been away from the site for a few weeks now,but I have the same ride as yourself with luxury pack.
I had to get 2 new steerers (front) tyres at 15K.The OEMs that were on there from new (Contis)were a great performer,
but,and there is always a but......they were down to the wear lines.I run 36 to 40 PSI and checked them every 2 weeks,had
alignments and watched them but they are to soft and there is so much Torque in the front end they wear out.I replaced them
Pirellis P7,tyre place really wanted to give me Contis again but I ran away.With what I have now I'm happy performance
and wear wise.Its a personal preference really.

My front tyres are balding quickly due to the torque. The rear tyres have about 60-70% left on them.

I drive my car for work and have racked up approx. 33,000km to date.

The performance of the Continentals are amazing for grip but like many others here I would like some that lasts at least 10-15k longer.

I hate the idea of having two types but can’t justify spending the money on replacing all four.

After reading this thread and other on the forum I’m still trying to get my head around which to get and I feel I’m none the wiser.

The Pirelli P Zero’s which Jondalar mentioned seem to have great mileage but then again it relevant to individual driving styles.

If you recently changed, what did you end up choosing and what is the current performance?
