  • Faulty Auto Dimming Rear View Mirror

    Hi All,

I just noticed on tonights drive home that the central rear view mirror, doesn't have that green tinge and that the headlights of the following cars seem to be dazzling. The green on indicator light is on and I have switched it on and off a couple of times vainly trying to reset it with no luck.

Any ideas, tips or tricks before I head to the dealers would be most appreciated.

    Thanks

    George

Does your model comes with a button on the bottom side of the mirror? Some of them need to be switched on first and green light should appear

Yes the drivers side mirror still dims.

I have toggled the on/off switch on the central rear view mirror and the green light is on.

        Thanks

Faulty Auto Dimming Rear View Mirror

If the drivers mirror still dims then the dimming feature is working however I would say your rear view mirror it self is faulty, as both the drivers mirror and rear view mirror should dim together.

The sensor is located on the bottom of the rear view mirror, which activates when a certain amount of light hits it.

It's worth scanning the car with vcds to see if any faults are listed relating to this.

            Hi All,

Just came back from the dealer.....

After 1hr labour charge at a fleet rate of $143 instead of the RRP of $185, I have bee told the the entire central rear vision mirror is unserviceable and that a new one is required. I was also told that the drivers side rear view mirror is NOT anti dazzling, yet last night I saw a green tinge to the reflection. Can anyone clarify this. MY12 125TDI Highline wagon.

The mirror costs $632.50 plus 1hr installation for a grand total of $775.50. When I told the service advisor that I would pass, I was magically informed that the dealer would 'work on my side and apply for a goodwill claim'. How nice of them (immense sarcasm).

Any advice from this distinguished forum??

            Thanks

That's a pricey mirror.....If you saw the green tinge on the drivers side rear view mirror then it's definitely the dimming one. It's easy to tell as there's usually a 1cm or so border of silver around the area that actually changes to the anti dazzle greenish colour.

Second hand could be a option for you to save a bit of cash, I actually have a spare mirror from a 2011 CC but it's cream/ black in colour.

If it's just the mirror, have a look on eBay. AutoDim mirrors for Passat $100 to $150

                  Hi all,

                  Just an update.

The dealer has come back to me with the news that VW Au has come back with a 60% parts goodwill offer, which makes the repair inc labour at just under $300. While I was deciding, the auto dimming feature seems to be working again intermittently. I am aware that this feature only activates when it detects and decides that the light in the rear view mirror is of an intensity to dazzle the driver and thereby only work intermittently, but there have been times when when I have been dazzled with the feature NOT active. My question is, what am i missing/doing wrong. I have cleaned the windscreen esp above the mirror, cleaned the light meter to the right of the green on light, cleaned the mirror itself. Is there an adjustment that I am missing or do I have an intermittent problem/loose wire??

                  Thanks in advance.

I'd say it's defiantly related to a fault with your interior rear view mirror it self, did the dealer check for faults with it? If so and they came back with the mirror conclusion then it's most likely a correct diagnosis
