  • Passat R36 Diff lock up

    Hi all

Need help. My R36 has had its diff locked up.
When putting it reverse it moves a little and then gets locked up (metal on metal sound) and the front wheels get locked up.
Putting it in neutral is the same. Unable to push it
Putting it in drive is ok and moves forward.

    Anyone experienced these problems?

I have had the clutch and bearings fixed on the gearbox 3 months ago.

Check the oil level in the Haldex and diff.

How did you go? This is a interesting one.

Have you put it on a hoist or jack stands to get all 4 wheels off the ground and see if it's the front or rear locking up? That might narrow down the point of failure to the Dsg or haldex

Its definitely the front wheels, back wheels are not locking up. Had to be dragged on the tow truck.
Took it to VW (dont know why) just said its gearbox.
Taking it to a gearbox specialist (done my clutch there) this week see what they say.
        See how we go

          Yeah that's interesting.

Never heard of this issue before.

Possibly a seized bearing in the Dsg by the sounds of it. Hopefully not too expensive!

That sounded rad until I read the metallic bit.. I hear the auto hold at the back tho, I'd make sure that doesn't play a part in the front? I'm no mechanic but would pulling fuses help diagnose??

Seems like its the transfer case...
Find out once it comes off

Unsual for the bevel box to die.

Although, if it's run out of oil it's very possible.

Autohold is part of the ABS.

What service interval is the oil meant to be replaced?

There's no set interval for it.

The oil is nothing fancy either. It's just 75W90 full synthetic transmission oil.
