  • R36 exhaust questions

Hey guys sorry if this topic has been done to death. Did use the search button but couldn't find much ( using tapatalk on my phone- might be limiting the search function).

Anyhow, the wife's wants a little bit of extra noise in her r36 wagon. She Definetly has given me strict instructions that there is to be NO in cabin DRONE. She sometimes takes clients out so she doesn't want it to be noisy.

What are the options out there? Not looking to spend an arm and a leg for the valved system.

Also has anyone attempted to do quad pipes or are the openings too small?

    Thanks guys .

Sounds like she needs something that can be turned on/off. That would be a custom venture with something like varex back boxes but leave everything else stock - Varex Mufflers
I replaced my 2 back boxes with straight 3" pipe for about 6 months before fitting the OEM boxes back on due to the immense drone at highway speed. That was genuinely unbearable. MOOOOOyouOOOOOOcantOOOholdOOOaOOOOOOconversationOO OOOOO.

If I could have flipped a switch to make them quiet I'd have kept it on for sure, the sound is amazing when you want it.
Quad pipes would mean a rear bumper mod.

But a custom valve based system that bypassed a set of rear mufflers around town yet allowed you to use them on the highway would be great.
The sound is spectacular without those two rear OEM mufflers choking it up

A custom setup with varex gear at the rear replacing both back boxes is likely to be cheaper than a system from supersprint, milltek or other vendors. Just need to get the tips right.

If I wanted the best of both worlds (and having experienced the extremes), that is what I'd do.

I miss that big blue wagon!

Hi, I initially had the suitcase muffler removed in my wagon and the sound was better and drone negligible, since then I've fittet Varex mufflers to the rear and its sound sweet! There is a small amount of drone but if the suitcase was still installed I don't think it would.

One problem with Varex is they can be deemed illegal/defectable. The other is when closed they are stupidly restrictive but when open can be ridiculously loud and drone.

Thanks for the input so far guys. Yea just looking for more of a rsspier note no so much performance gains. Heard the suitcase exhaust mod is good but can be droney

Have you used an internal switch to control it or is it still on the key fob?

Some sound clips would be awesome.

My scenario had retained the centre (suitcase?) muffler.

I find that I rarely close it off, it's not overly loud unless you open it up, I've got the fob for control. Unfortunately due to space the motors for the valves are underneath but I'm having some nice stainless covers made up. I've got a sound clip but Tapatalk won't let me upload it from my phone.....

Hi guys, I have cats that flow twice as good, aftermarket rear mufflers (nothing special brand) and original resonator still in place.
Sounds great to me and no drone.

Can you post some clips of your setup and roughly how much it set you back?

Could work, they're sold on AliExpress, then could run fairly straight through rear mufflers....
